I'm in the process of purchasing a piece of land(60 acres) that has a large pile of coal tailings on it, from a mining operation in the 30's and 40's..

some core samples were done on it about 5 years ago and they came up with a coal content of approx 30%.

the pile is about 300 thousand yards of material.

if there any real use for this material on the open market? can the coal be washed out of it to resale it?

or should I just look at using it for fill?

if you need any more info then what I've posted.. please feel free to ask any questions..

Thankyou for your time.. Steve

Coal Pile Help

Greetings from the Frozen Eastern Wildernes,

Your coal headache is easily solved if you have a

steel smelter nearby as they just love carbon, A recycling smelter loves carbon too.

Another thought is if you have a power generating station nearby I am sure they would take it of your hands as well, plants with coal stokers burn everything and recycle unburned fines back into the fuel stream.

Your big worry is surface and ground water pollution as well as contaminants in the ground below the pile as the coal will also likely contain oils from the mining process. Down here in the eastern wilderness we call that a potential for "brown field" pollution.

The other option is to burn the coal your self using a "Burnham" brand coal stoker -Burnham Boiler Company. Its big enough to heat a small sky scraper with 6 horsepower of steam energy and or power a small steam turbine to sell the power generated by the boiler.

Food for thought or fuel for the stoker as the case may be:^)

Coal Spoils

dear Anil,

As a rule, coking coal is a very high grade metalurgical coal and I am unsure about the

quality of his spoil stock pile. I am unsure as to whether a coking oven would take his coal off of his hands or how close a railroad line is to consider the possibility so its a problem either way.
