Aveiro-Vilas Formosa Highway project, Portugal

FOUR STAGE MOBILE CRUSHER PROVIDES HIGH QUALITY HIGHWAY AGGREGATES

Mobile crushing and screening processes are becoming more popular particularly for road works requiring equipment to be moved along the project as work progresses.

Portuguese contractor Rosas Construtores recently opted for a Metso Minerals four stage mobile crushing and screening operation for the highway renewal project between Aveiro and Vilar Formosa.

With most north to south motorways completed, Portugal is now investing in highways facing towards the cities of Madrid and Barcelona in Spain.

One of these, South of Oporto, is the 200km long IP5 connecting the cities of Aveiro and Vilar Formosa, close to the Spanish border.

Over a period of two years, the existing two-lane highway will be widened into a safer four-lane motorway.

Rosas Construtores is responsible for producing 65,000 tonnes of aggregate for a 9km section near Talhades. The end product requirement specifies 0-50 mm aggregate comprising at least 35% of fines

Four stage process to guarantee end product requirements

In order to meet the end product and capacity demands, Metso Minerals Portugal recommended a mobile process comprising a primary, secondary and tertiary crushing plant and a mobile screen; the tertiary being necessary to guarantee the required amounts of fines.

At the primary stage the Nordberg LT110 mobile crushing plant with a jaw crusher decreases 0-800 mm granite feed with 140-160mm setting. A secondary LT300HP with the proven HP series secondary cone crusher, operates with a 38-42 mm setting, followed by the largest mobile screen, a Nordberg ST356 featuring a large, 4.8 x 1.5 metre three-deck screen.

To secure the amount of fines the ST356, using a 56 mm screen mesh, is equipped with a special conveyor taking the oversized 50-100 mm materials into a LT300HP mobile crushing plant equipped with a tertiary HP cone crusher. After fine crushing with a 16 mm setting, the material is fed back to the mobile screen.

Capacity between 210-290 tph

A capacity of 210-290 tonnes per hour is being achieved using the four-stage process. The capacity varies according to the amount of fines in the feed material.

“We are very happy with the capacity of the mobile equipment which is able to meet the special end product requirements. In six months, we have already produced 45,000 tonnes which is more than expected,” say Quarry Manager, Jos Antunes, Rosas Construtores.

“The total economy of the mobile processes is good, and we always have the flexibility to move the equipment along the process. On completion of this project we will move our fleet to the next crushing site in Ribeira de Pea, near Oporto,” Jos Antunes adds.
