Metal Detectors For Steel Cord Belts
Installing a metal detector on a steel corded belt can be very tricky.
There are special detectors designed to work with steel corded belts, which Eriez have supplied to customers in the past. The sensitivity is slightly less, i.e. larger pieces of metal, due to the effect of the steel cords. Problems do appear when the belt is damaged and the steel cords start to touch together. Also the join in the belt can be a problem if not terminated properly.

I am not an expert on metal detectors and would not be able to say how the metal detector will tackle with steel cord belt which has uniform pattern of steel cord plus disruption of uniformity at vulcanized joint.
Generally, the metal detectors are placed either in the beginning of the system or at the end of the system. In many of the systems, there are small belt conveyors near beginning and end of the system. So, one should try to put metal detector on such conveyor which will have textile fabric belt. I have decided many many layouts for bulk material handling systems and have rarely come across a situation, wherein one has to put the metal detector on steel cord belt only.
If need be, the system designer can introduce a conveyor at appropriate location, which will have textile fabric belt to suit metal detector.
The metal detector experts would be able to give specific answer to your question.

A special metal detector is required whenever a steel corded belt is utilized.
Eriez Model 1230 Metal Detector can be installed on a conveyor with a steel corded belt. The expected sensitivity of this model is equal to 5% of the aperture height.

Is it necessary to have specialised Metal Detectors for steel cord belts ?
If standard detectors are operating satisfactorily with textile reinforced belts is it possible to adjust its sensitivity so as to "ignore" the steel cords ? Would this adjustment affect its detection efficiency ? ■
