Dear all,

How do you do the mooring operation of Barges in the Jetty Berth?

In our way, the big rope is pulled by small rope and the knot of big rope is put on the bollards at Jetty. Rest of the operation is done by Barge operator.

The method, we follow is highly labour intensive. Other countries must have developed better technology in terms of efficiency and cost.

Kindly share your experience & knowledge.

Depending on your definition of barges it might be possible to employ the hydraulic keyholes used to capture the Seacat Ferries at Dun Laoghaire, Ireland. This can be ship or shore based. Essentially a profiled plate is lowered over the bollard and by shortening the connecting ram the vessel is secured to the jetty. It is the fastest mooring method and works well in more hostile waters than you will encounter. It is much cheaper than winches and hawsers.

Hurling mooring ropes around is one of the sadder residues of the age of sail and was still justified by the manoeuvering limitations of seamen and vessels in the days of steam. I can soon design you a safe and fast system to suit your local conditions.

Try Mooring International for a vacuuum system.....used on the New Zealand South/North ferries and also Tasmania/Mainland ferries - works well I understand.

Where do I send my consulting fee to??
