Dear all,

Is it possible to have two gravity take-ups in a Conveyor?

Many a times, while preparing the layout drawings, we have to increase the height of the galleries and subsequent transfer tower to accommodate the Vertical Travel of Gravity Take up Pulley.

If we can distribute the travel in two parts, we can save lot of project cost.

Will anybody throw some light on it?

Dear Shri Rekhawar,

The vertical gravity take-up having two take-up pulleys attached to common counterweight is sometimes used to double the take-up stroke in the available height.

There is more than one reason to have two takeups which includes your interest of having extra travel. However, your question may be misinterpreted in the strict sense you offer.

1. There are many belt conveyors that have a five pulley (W) trolley verses the normal 3 (U) pulley gravity takeup. These can come in two arrangements - one is the "w" style and the other you can see on the 16 km ZISCO overland on our website:

www.conveyor-dynamics.com

2. uphill and downhill undulating conveyors may have dual, but separate, takeup trolleys either side of the drive, but one tower and weight such as La Ciopa (Placer Dome), Chile installed many years ago - although CDI designed it with Fluor I have forgotten its details.

3. You need for a dual throw moving assy. may not be needed. We have designed one fixed takeup for extra belt storage and long term permanent stretch while the second is only designed for dynamics of stretch during start and stop with all load conditions plus thermal cycling.

Dual counterweights and trolleys can be very dangerous unless you design for dynamics with shock and awe. Even point one above has to have special features.

Why not a horizontal travelling TU pulley on a trolley (or an inclined angle) or same at the tail end ie tail/TU pulley???

Cheers

A paper was published on SAIMH called "Multiple take-up conveyor systems" by Barfott and Gauvin.

It may be relevant.

Can you provide the link to the paper. Internet search for the subject does not yield any result.

Here's the link: http://www.saimh.co.za/

Go to "Beltcon" then select "Beltcon9 1997"

The whole Beltcon site is an excellent read for anyone interested in conveyors.
