Infrared Thermography

Posted in: , on 30. Sep. 2004 - 19:50

After working as a process engineer in the mineral processing and solid/liquid separation industries for over 18 years, two years ago, I began an infrared thermography consulting business. Presently my clients are primarily hotels and hospitals with some manufacturing facilities. With the continued increase in energy prices, infrared thermography scanning can be a useful tool to help identify and solve many energy related problems.

I would be interested in your experience using this technology.

As my schedule permits I can provide an on-site demonstration scan of electrical and process equipment.

I have a web site that describes some of these services;

I have attached an example of a bad fuse connection that was identified using IR Thermography.

I know one quarry that I worked at had this done every year, the manager found it very useful. Said it helped him sleep at night.

Can be used for mechanical components also.

Understand some coal pits use it for monitoring spontaneous combustion of sealed areas (could use it for active areas also, I guess).

This type of system has been used to identify imminent failure of conveyor idler rolls. A videod thermal image of the conveyor was used to identify 'hot-spots' bearings where heat build up showed that failure was possible. These rolls were removed from service at next service day and were then 'refurbished' by replacing seals and bearings. The site was the Richards Bay Coal Terminal in South Africa. Believe that system no longer being used.

Have you every heard of it being used to track worn idler shells (not bearings etc)?

Thanks and regards,

Hal

Have you refined/defined the thermal image by computer patterns to compare by computer different times images were taken?
