Tobacco dust (floor sweepings) and stems

Posted in: , on 21. Sep. 2004 - 00:46

Do any members have information on the bulk density and any other material characteristics for the above materials (i.e. ash content, moisture content, av bulk density kg/m3 etc?)

This information would be most useful in confirming some data I currently have and also filling in some of the blanks regarding these materials

Thank You

"Average" figures for these properties published in journals cannot be relied upon. If you have a sample, it is a simple matter and more accurate, to measure these yourself.

For bulk density, fill a cardboard carton of known capacity and weigh it. Subtract the weight of the carton etc... That way, you can estimate the packed b.d and the loose b.d, if you need to know.

Moisture measurement only needs a drying oven and an accurate weighing machine. Ash content; similar.

Always much better to measure a sample yourself.

I usually suggest getting a water tight container (bucket, jam jar, plastic drinks cup etc. )

Weigh the container empty

Weigh the container full of material

Weigh the container full of water

It's easy enough to calculate the density based on water being 1000 kg /m3 without the need to measure the volume of the container.

Thanks Designer,

I didn't notice until after I had posted that the original enquiry is dated Sept.2004. I hope the poster got helpful information elsewhere.

Your suggestion about monitoring future registration is a good one. I hope the administrator can act upon it.
