Pilbara Iron Chooses IntelliMine® System

Tucson, Arizona – September 15, 2004 – Modular Mining Systems, the world leader in computer-based solutions for maximizing mine productivity, has received an order from Pilbara Iron to provide dispatching and reporting systems across its Western Australian iron ore operations. Pilbara Iron (formerly Hamersley Iron) has operated Modular’s DISPATCH® systems at the Paraburdoo, Tom Price and Marandoo operations since the early 1990s.

“With this new order, we will be installing systems at the Brockman and Yandi mines as well as upgrading the existing systems at Tom Price and Paraburdoo to our latest MasterLink® technology” explained Eric Davidson, General Manager for Modular’s Asia Australian operations.

The IntelliMine® system selected by Pilbara Iron includes: the DISPATCH® system to provide automatic, optimized haul truck assignments, integrate the entire mining process, and improve mine productivity; and the PowerView™ reporting package, an SQL system that can be used to create virtually any type of Windows®-based report on load, haul, or dump operations. The combination of these two IntelliMine® modules provide the platform for applications such as MineCare® maintenance package and ProVision™ High-Precision GPS machine guidance systems – as well as accommodating the rapid growth currently being experienced in the iron ore industry.

“Modular has had a long and successful partnership with Pilbara Iron.” noted Davidson. “We are very pleased to be able to deliver a world-class system that will provide key productivity solutions to grow Pilbara Iron’s business and help increase its technological edge.”

Pilbara Iron, which currently operates a total of nine mines in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, approximately 1,000 kilometers north of Perth, will employ the system across seven of those mines, on a variety of equipment including: 53 trucks, 23 loading units, and 1 crusher. Installation is scheduled to begin in September 2004.

About Pilbara Iron:

Pilbara Iron was established in 2004 to facilitate closer cooperation between Hamersley Iron and Robe River Iron Associates – two independent Rio Tinto Group iron ore operations with operations in the Pilbara.
