i am trying to design a belt conveyor to carry 2" limestone. the capacity, distance and incline are given. the design must meet british standard specs. all components necessary for the conveyor to operate, including head chute, tail chute, drive, pulleys etc. must be specified.
i have had no luck finding information online and am having trouble getting a hold of any relevant books. does anyone have any pointers, specifically on significant equations? ■

British Standards for belt conveyors are quite irrelevant. There is a BS for calculating power consumption but its a bit long winded. There's another one for guarding, nip points & all that stuff. Have a look at the BS Handbook to find what you need. Surely the easy way is to make sure that your suppliers are working to BS & leave it to them & anybody's 9001 bit. BS, EN Scars & all!
For the real work you need a manufacturer's handbook as published by Fenner, Dunlop, Goodyear, Martin Engineering, Continental to name few. There is a handy MHEA 'Recommended Practice for Troughed Belt Conveyors' which used to be called the 'grey book' until later editions changed the cover & it became known as the 'blue book'. I don't know what the latest colour is but it will still be called the same in longhand & won't be free.
Why does everything have to be free? These are the tools of the trade & without them you are not even a craft apprentice. ■

All those years ago when I was learning and couldn't afford a reference book I'd borrow it from the technical library. If I really needed it then I'd save up my pennies, stop drinking beer AND BUY IT.

Reference Book
The book ‘Engineering Science And Application Design For Belt Conveyors’ authored by Ishwar Mulani Sir is a very good book for design engineering of belt conveyors. In this book the conveyor design is on the basis of DIN-22101 and ISO-5048 standards. So it is can be used to design conveyors primarily in tune with national standards of most of the countries in the world across Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia since ISO-5048 is approved (accepted) by its member bodies officially representing governments from countries Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico,Netherland, Norway, Philippines, South Africa, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom, 1979-USSR (i.e. Russia), etc.
So, an Indian engineer like me will find it close to IS, a British engineer is likely to find it close to BS and so on.It also provides excellent understanding of the issues and therefore helps in design. The book is very helpful to designers.
