INVENTORY CONTROL – FROM REMOTE TRANSMISSION TO PLANNING/CONTROL SYSTEM INTEGRATION

Any modern manufacturer is aware of the importance of optimising and interlinking logistic processes, as a part of supply chain management. Materials required must always be available on time and in sufficient quantities, while, simultaneously, stocks and transport costs must be minimised. Measured information about current inventories in tanks and silos are input variables throughout the supply chain.

Since material flow coordination normally involves several locations, the place of evaluation is often far from the place of measurement. Although the Internet has facilitated easy remote transmission of measured data, there are also security concerns surrounding the connection to networks.

However, being able to access measured data is only the beginning. It is the processing of the data – and more specifically the integration into control and planning systems – that allows the acquired information to be used effectively to automate logistic processes. Endress + Hauser offers a consistent and flexible concept for on-site measurement, from remote transmission to specific processing, as well as the integration of current inventory data into the central planning and control systems.

The starting point of this information is the tried and tested process instrumentation of Endress + Hauser. The company’s new communication interface – Fieldgate – enables remote monitoring, diagnosis and configuration of Smart transmitters worldwide, either via telephone lines (analogue), Ethernet TCP/IP or mobile communications (GSM). The measured data is web-compatible and can, therefore, be viewed on a web browser without the need for additional software.

Building on the infrastructure at the place of measurement, Endress + Hauser offers a whole range of options for specific processing and the integration of measured data at the place of evaluation. This includes simple processing and evaluation of inventory data by means of standard office software (Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Access) to the integration into commercial systems such as SAP.

Customers can choose to either handle regular inquiry and processing of measured data themselves, or take advantage of a corresponding application service of Endress + Hauser. The company’s inventory control programme is completed with the service and support of instrumentation at the warehousing locations.

The end result is a source of reliable and current information about present inventories that eliminates the need for manual stocktaking and facilitates more exact determination of availability and warehouse capacity, as well as improved planning and scheduling of deliveries. Automated demand messages at defined level limits ensure timely reordering and thus avoid breakdowns, while also minimising safety reserves. Permanent inventory reconciliation with paper records permits prompt recognition of deviations and the investigation of the causes. In addition, the access to measured data from all over the world may be used for the implementation of business models such as Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI).
