Exhaust Spark Arresters Reduce Fire Risk

A vital and often ignored safety feature, designed to greatly reduce the fire risk associated with the use of internal combustion engines, is the Spark Arrester. All engines, especially diesel engines, emit highly dangerous sparks produced by the combustion process or the ignition of carbon build up in the exhaust system.

Risks of fires or catastrophic explosions associated with exhaust sparks is so high that in many environments the fitting of Spark Arresters is mandatory, as detailed in the European ATEX ( ATmosphere Explosive ) directive. Many firms do not take into consideration this area of risk when carrying out Health and Safety assessments, but with the increased use of small and medium sized diesel engines in diverse applications and places ( such as pumps, generators and forklifts,) the need for protection has greatly increased even with modern cleaner burning engines.

Western Tydens produces a range of spark arresters, designed to trap and de-energise these sparks before they can be ejected from the engine exhaust system. The simple fail safe, maintenance free design has been tested and approved to ATEX EN1834 : versions are available to suit a wide range of engines from 5 HP single cylinder to 500HP multi-cylinder units.
