A. INTRODUCTION TO POWDER TECHNOLOGY

This course introduces participants to the main material properties, such as:

Internal friction, cohesion, compressive strength, flushing, etc.

A survey will be given of existing testing methods, the relationship between problems in process and measured results.

Automatic and manual testing equipment will be demonstrated:

Shear tester RO-200 AUTOMATIC

Quality control tester RO-200 QC

Compressive strength tester TR-100

Automatic Time consolidation tester

De-aeration tester AERO-100

The relationship between powders and the functioning of industrial devices and processes or plants will be explained for various industrial situations, such as: Flow pattern of silos; funnel-flow, mass-flow, ideal-flow, pressure on silo walls, choice of discharge equipment and their influences on the functioning of silos as well as arching, rat- ```````````````````````````````````````holing and flushing

The objective

of this course is to provide the participants with the knowledge needed to evaluate existing or projected installations, to identify possible problems and to decide on appropriate actions.

Required knowledge:

elementary mechanics and mathematics.

B. MEASUREMENT OF POWDER PROPERTIES

Basic powder properties will be measured by each participant:

internal angle of friction, wall friction, and density.

The more time consuming measurements, such as time consolidation and direct measurement of compressive strength, will be carried out in groups with the assistance of our staff.

Special measurements, such as DE-AERATION test, will be carried out in groups, whereby the participants will prepare the samples and perform the measurement.

Available equipment:

RO-200 AUTOMATIC

RO-200 QC

RO-200 LOCO

RO-200 SEMI-AUTOMATIC

RO-200 MANUAL

De-aeration tester AERO-100

The objective

of this section is to introduce the participants to the major powder properties, to carry our various tests and establish the criteria for the selection of practical methods of measurements for existing circumstances.

Required knowledge: none

C. QUALITY CONTROL

Measurement of powder properties, specially developed for production control and for monitoring production processes. Process variables effecting powder properties will be explained with practical examples. Major variables are : temperature, humidity, re-crystallization, particle size distribution, powder mixtures.

The objective of this section is to introduce the production engineer to the various methods available to him for controlling a production process, to keep powder properties within specified limits and to take appropriate action in order to achieve the required product specifications.

Required knowledge:

introduction to powder technology.

D. BLENDING, DEGRADATION, SEGREGATION, DUST PROBLEMS AND their SOLUTIONS

This course will include introduction to mixing problems, such as multi-component mixing, equalizing of product quality, small component mixing, mixing of small and large quantities. Vertical and horizontal segregation will be explained and methods to avoid them will be discussed. The methods to avoid or minimize degradation will be discussed for small and large batches. Special attention will be given to the compaction and the time consolidation, also the methods for avoiding them.

The special requirements for handling of fine powders will be discussed as well as dust problems and solutions for dealing with them.

Objective: A theoretical and practical background for solving various mixing problems.

Required knowledge: Introduction to powder technology
