On February 12th, 2001, a contract to supply, erect and commission a 2000 MT/HR handling plant for rocks and aggregates, comprising a belt conveyor system and shiploader, was signed between the Port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates and ThyssenKrupp Fördertechnik’s Business Unit Materials Handling.
Exactly eighteen months later, the first ships were loaded at the port and, following successful load tests, the plant was handed over to the client in August 2002.
This eighteen-month period saw close co-operation between the client, the Port of Fujairah, and their consultant, Connell Wagner of Australia, resulting in the development of this handling plant which has become a major feature of the port expansion.
Previously, the rocks and aggregates were transported by lorries from the quarry to the port, where the material was put into intermediate storage. It was then re-loaded onto lorries by wheeled loaders and subsequently taken to the jetty, where it was finally loaded into the ships by grab cranes.
Now, the lorries unload the material directly into four underground hoppers, which are located next to each other in the middle of the quarry. From there, it is extracted by means of hopper discharge conveyors, which operate at infinitely variable capacities by frequency control and it is then transferred onto the first of seven belt conveyors.
From the quarry, the conveyors go over the existing plant and buildings by means of belt bridges, as well as passing through a tunnel under a four-lane motorway, in order to reach the port.
After a total distance of approximately 3.5 km., the seventh and final belt conveyor arrives at the port jetty, where the material is then transferred by a jetty conveyor bridge and tripper car to the shiploader. The shuttle head on the shiploader enables it to reach any point in the ship’s hold.
The shiploader travels up to 250 m. along the jetty and the maximum loading capacity that it has achieved to date is 2,200 tph. for ships of up to 80,000 DWT.
The rocks and aggregates being handled have a bulk density of 1.6 to 1.8 t/m3 and their grain size ranges from 8 to 40 mm. The conveyor system’s transfer chutes have been lined with wear-resistant material because of the material’s abrasiveness.
Demand for the material is high, as it is extensively used in the Gulf region as a raw material for concrete production.
Since the plant went into operation, it has been running almost without interruption, and the Port of Fujairah has been able to export more than 600,000 t after only a few weeks of service.
It is anticipated that the Port will handle approx. 7,500,000 t. in 2003 and already, consideration is being given to either extending the handling plant or increasing its capacity.
