Kharg Petrochemical Co. is a manufacturer of granulated sulphur. At the moment we are constructing a mechanized warehouse with a capacity of about 35000 tons for the product.Storage is planned to be carried out using a conventional belt-tripper system forming a pile with a height of about 12 meters .

In order to discharge the product from the warehouse to ship loading facilities, the floor will be constructed in form of 18 funnels in two rows ( 9 fennels per row). For more clarification a drawing of the warehouse is attached .

We would be very much grateful if you could let us know whether the discharge configuration is suitable or not.

Thank you very much and looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Dear Sir,

A vibrating floor would be ideally suited to the reclaiming of granulated sulphur. The base would have to be straight slopes with an incline of 7 to 10° towards the reclaiming tunnels, depending on the throughput required.

Dear Kharg Petrochemical Co.:

As for the suitability of the discharge configuration we are not experts to say. However money could be saved by reducing the floor area, and consequently the number of discharge funnels.

This could be accomplished with a concrete dome for the storage structure instead of the structure shown on the drawing. By piling sulphur high against the walls of a concrete dome, the floor area will be reduced significantly. As a result, a higher percentage of the sulfur can be withdrawn via gravity, and with a reduced number of pile dischargers / funnels. Additional savings will be realised in the cost of filling conveyors, since with a concrete dome the belt tripper system could be eliminated (only a conveyor to a single fill opening in the dome is required)

Dear M.T. Babayan,

Following are my comments on the sulphur reclaiming system being considered by you.

Primarily there are three methods to reclaim material from such Silos.

1) Conveyor in tunnel. This conveyor receives feed from feed hopper flush with floor. The material is fed into hopper by gravity, bulldozer or pay loader. Hopper have belt feeder / vibrating feeder. This is centuries old method with its own advantages & disadvantages.

2) Conveyor at ground level, along silo length. Conveyor can be within or outside silo. Feed hopper is having top height approximately 2.4 meter (8 feet), and is located on conveyor. Feed hopper receives material by pay loader. Pay loader movement is through side opening in silo. Belt feeder / vibrating feeder below hopper. This method avoids tunnel but operation is clumsy

3) Scraper reclaimer machine of appropriate type reclaims material as it advances in to stockpile. Scraper reclaimer discharge boom feeds on to conveyor located on shelf along silo length. In this method, the operation is neat and free from material flow blockage etc. Everything is above ground and is operated with least number of operating personnel. This is a preferred method in Germany / Europe. This scraper reclaimer arrangement can also be circular type (for circular silo)

Presently your system is of serial no. 1

A) You can have level floor, so that pay loader / bulldozer can push the material if need be. Material may not flow on very shallow inclination of floor.

B) Use steel hopper having mouth opening of at least 2.2 x 2.2 m i.e. 7 x 7 ft (matching to tunnel width). Hopper side wall inclination to be around 60 degrees.

C) Install hopper wall vibrators, two per hopper. You can use UHMW / SS liners. This method will avoid material flow blockage due to arcing etc.

Concurrence & Comment

Dear Mr. Babayan:

I concur with Mr. I. G. Mulani's summary that there are essentially 3 alternative methods for reclaim of sulphur. Meanwhile there are numerous equipment suppliers / manufacturers to deliver variations of these 3 principal methods.

Regardless of which of the 3 methods is ultimately selected, by utilizing a concrete dome as the storage structure, the cost and complexity of the reclaim system will be reduced (fewer tunnels, less feeders, shorter conveyors, smaller stacker reclaimer unit in the case of alt. 3, etc.).

The filling equipment will also be simpler and less expensive (a single conveyor to a single fill point at the top of the dome.)

In the long run having fewer moving parts to maintain and repair will be more economical and less troublesome for you the operator.

A properly designed concrete dome allows the operator to take advantage more fully of gravity which is always working and is "free energy". Yet at the same time they have the ability to get in with mechanical reclaim equipment and/or end loaders if the material becomes difficult.

Please contact us if you have additional questions.

Thanks again!
