VWF Drives or Wound Rotor Drives?

Posted in: , on 12. May. 2012 - 06:52

Dear All,

Could you please share your ideas regarding using the VVVF drives for the conveyors or Wound Rotor Motors. The drive sizes range from 450KW to 2000KW.

Other than the cost , what other aspects need to be considered before making a final decision? What is the trend in the industry?

Many thanks for your help

This may be of interest:

Not convinced of all of the conclusions, though this does not mean they are wrong.

There is plenty of other information out there if you go looking for it.

It depends on the criteria in your application: CAPEX / OPEX, "complexity", functionality ("smoothness", starting / stopping, load sharing, part / over speed operation, power factor correction, distribution harmonics), safety (unbalanced voltages / stray currents, limited leakage protection) etc.

Another item to consider is do you have access to resources with capability to calculate SRS / WRIM performance (not as common as one may believe).

There are now alternatives to the traditional SRS (liquid / resistor):

Vvf Drives,Wound Rotor Drives.

The 3 types of Drives normally used are.

1.Squirrel cage Motor with Fluid couplings.

2.Wound rotor type with rotor resistance (normal resistance or liquid type resistance).

In case of wound motor maintenance is bit more and some time with heavy load on belt, starting trouble has been experienced.

3.VVF. In case of VVF drives, the conveyor starts with smooth acceleration. It is very good for the long life of conveyor system. But for higher

power requirement multi drives are necessary due to low voltage VVF system.

Squirrel cage with fluid coupling is the simplest, but selection of fluid coupling has to be care fully done to avoid mis-alignment/vibration etc.

For most of the installations with motor up to 1000KW,Squirrel cage with delayed action fluid drive is used.

Wound motor with resistance starting is cumbersome, but is a cheap option.

VVF drive is the costliest due to several drive for the same conveyor.

As Mr.Lyle Brown has told, you may select any system depending on Capex/Opex and site conditions like availability of power and Regulation of the power lines etc.

Many Thanks
