COMPANY PROFILE

Advanced Cyclone Systems, S.A. (ACS) is exclusively dedicated to the development, and international commercialization of the most efficient cyclone systems worldwide.

ACS works in a very close cooperation with its clients in order to design custom made dust collector systems that really solve their unmet needs, either air filtration and dust control or powder recovery.

The company has currently ongoing projects in Europe, Asia and South America.

ACS was founded by Professor Romualdo Salcedo (CTO) from the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto (FEUP) and Pedro Arajo (CEO), Engineer from FEUP and MBA from Nova University. ACS was supported by CoHitec’s program from COTEC Portugal since its establishment.

Although the company is very young, several systems have already been commercialized in the past years through an agreement between FEUP and a specialized engineering company.

Presently, ACS has exclusive commercialization rights for Hurricane and ReCyclone® Systems.

Mission: To achieve total particle capture with cyclones, reaching bag house redundancy.

Vision: To be the worldwide leading company in cyclone systems engineering and supply.

Applications include particulate matter (PM) emission control in furnaces and boilers and powder recovery in the chemical, food and pharmaceutical industries.

Products include numerically optimized cyclones – Hurricane – which are more efficient than any other cyclone geometry in the market for equivalent pressure drop, and mechanical or electrostatic recirculating cyclones – ReCyclone® Systems – with ESP efficiencies at low investment costs. Electrostatic recirculation for fine powder capture was the winner of the National Environmental Press Award in 2008. This prize, sponsored by the Environmental Ministry and the Portuguese Environmental Agency, aims the recognition of Portuguese and European innovations that contribute for a better environment. ReCyclone Systems was one of the 10 nominees for the 2008 European Environmental Press (EEP) Award, for which companies from all areas of the environment compete.

DISTRIBUTION

ACS objective is to gain reputation as the leading company in cyclone system design at a global scale, aiming total particle capture without the investment costs of ESPs and the maintenance costs of bag filters.

ACS is very focused in terms of cyclone technology with a short line of products but highly dispersed in respect to application and geographical scope.

Distribution is ACS biggest challenge and the strategy is different according to each market segment. Besides working directly with customers or through representatives, ACS has been celebrating commercial agreements with complementary equipment suppliers, such as boilers or dryers, or big engineering companies.

It is from Porto that ACS exports its technology to whole Europe. In projects for other continents, part of the production is transferred to the partner-manufacturer that is closer to the installation premises.

Although having the goal of a global presence, ACS entry-markets are Portugal, Spain, France, Scandinavia, Poland and Brazil, countries in which ACS is in the process of developing commercial agreements for its distribution strategy.

OUR METHOD:

Extensive scientific knowledge in cyclone design and particle agglomeration

Prof. Romualdo Salcedo, CTO of ACS, together with his research group from the Faculty of Engineering of Porto (FEUP) are in the frontline of cyclone design optimization and particle agglomeration modeling.

A state of the art computer program (PACyc) was developed with the objective of predicting the capture of submicrometric and nanometric particles in cyclones, usually agglomerated in larger particles.

Several related scientific papers have been published since 1993.

Custom made systems and accurate efficiency forecasts through our pilot systems

ACS has an extensive particle size distribution database from very different industrial dusts analyzed in ACS’ pilot systems.

This information, used in combination with computer simulation provides very confident efficiency estimates for new powders under operating conditions reported by clients.

Dust samples, of which collection efficiency is very difficult to estimate, can be further tested in a pilot unit.
