Gottwald Receives Order for HMK 170 E Mobile Harbour Crane for River Port of Astrakhan in Russia

TOC Europe 2010, Valencia (Spain), 8 June 2010Gottwald Port Technology GmbH (Gottwald) has received an order from JSC Cargo Company “Armada” for the delivery of an HMK 170 E Mobile Harbour Crane to the river port of Astrakhan in Russia.

This Generation 4 machine will be the first ever Gottwald crane to be used in a Russian river port. Astrakhan is located on the Volga river, close to where it discharges into the Caspian Sea. Here, the 63-tonne HMK 170 E will handle steel coils for a steel mill adjacent to the terminal. Commercial operation is scheduled to begin in autumn 2010.

“Gottwald enjoys an excellent reputation among terminal operators in Russia and is known for providing first-class technology and services,” said Vitaliy Cherkasov, General Director of JSC Cargo Company “Armada”. “With the new crane we intend to upgrade our existing cargo handling equipment and increase capacities. The HMK 170 E will help us to make the Port of Astrakhan a more efficient and attractive shipping hub.”

HMK 170 E – Popular in Russia

The HMK 170 E is a preferred option in ports which are heavily frequented by feeder ships and other vessels with widths of up to 20 metres. This universal crane has a lifting capacity of up to 63 tonnes and is used for handling containers, general cargoes and bulk goods with motor grabs. The HMK 170 EG 4-rope grab variant is particularly suited to professional, heavy-duty handling of such bulk materials as coal, ores, agribulk, aggregates and sand. Among Russian ports, both the 2-rope and the 4-rope-grab variants are popular. In addition, many HSK 170 EG four-rope grab Portal Harbour Cranes are in service in Russian ports, handling general cargo, steel and bulk materials. With their custom-made portal solutions, they enable movements of railway trains and road trucks and operation of conveyor belts below the portals – situations frequently encountered in Russia, where a standard gauge of 10.5 metres is used. Owing to the construction and high lifting capacities, Mobile Harbour Crane technology with customised rail-mounted portals is often purchased as a modern, flexible, economical replacement for antiquated equipment in Russia and elsewhere.

Gottwald in River Ports

“Gottwald is present in many sea ports in Russia, but this order is all the more pleasing since it will be the first installation in a Russian river port. Given the strong potential in the Russian market, a country with many huge rivers, this order will serve as an excellent reference,” said Jan Lind, Gottwald's Regional Product Manager. “In addition, it underlines once more that our Mobile Harbour Cranes are ideally suited to meeting the requirements of terminals of any size and configuration.” It was only in spring 2009 that Gottwald delivered an HMK 170 E to the river port of Asuncin in Paraguay, located on the left bank of the Paraguay River, connecting the landlocked country with coastal ports. Here, the crane handles containers and general cargo and helps to improve the attractiveness of the inland waterway network. “Such orders are a sign that Gottwald is well positioned to conquer new markets,” said Lind.
