New CEO and globalization strategy at newtec !

For more than 40 years the NEWTEC group (around 350 people in France and Belgium) offers automatic end-of-line packaging equipment, continuous handling and storage systems.

The group was formed from several SMEs specializing in bag and unit load palletizing, storage and continuous handling systems. The latest acquisition was FL Systems which joined the group under the name of newtec alvey in early 2008.

The unprecedented economic crisis of 2009 did not spare NEWTEC whose sales decreased by 20% compared to 2008 to reach a level of € 53m of which 40% for export. In spite of this difficult context, NEWTEC ensured the handover from Jean-Bernard IHLER, former Chairman now retired, to Didier PRADEILLES having joined the Group 18 months before.

Didier Pradeilles was successively Manager, Vice-President and President at Danfoss Commercial Compressors, then Branch President at VALEO before arriving at NEWTEC at the end of 2008 as General Manager.

In this particularly strained economic environment Didier Pradeilles has buckled down to a group strategy focusing on its core business : end-of-line solutions for unit loads (cases, carton cases, packs, crates…) or bags and distribution systems.

This policy was accompanied by the launch of our new website at the end of 2009 explaining our positioning.

We organised the group by passing from 5 SMEs (newtec bag palletizing, newtec case palletizing, newtec alvey, newtec handling systems et newtec filling systems) to a global group based on:

• a common sales & service organisation, i.e. « ONE FACE FOR THE CUSTOMER », with 4 well-identified areas :

- End-of-line systems for unit loads

- End-of-line systems for bags

- Logistics and distribution systems

- Services

• a global operations organisation with the support of dedicated and specialized competence centres:

-SAINT LAURENT SUR SEVRE (France) – Palletizing centre for unit loads – (formerly newtec case palletizing)

-MULHOUSE (France) – Palletizing centre for bags - (formerly newtec bag palletizing)

-OUDENAARDE (Belgium) – Logistics & Distribution centre – (formerly newtec alvey and newtec handling systems)

• A reinforced R&D organisation to prepare the future product ranges

• The traditional support functions (HR, Finance, …) also globalised.

At the end of 2009 Rousset’s industrial site closed unfortunately with a restructuring plan which concerned about thirty people. Manufacturing has moved to our Oudenaarde site in Belgium. The sales and service staff have joined the head office in Rousset.

We decided to stop R&D for the filling activity but after-sales service is still assured.

We have kept and boosted the SOMEFI mail-order selling activity as an autonomous Business Unit.

This globalization policy was supported by our shareholders and financial partners and has allowed us to fully adapt our structure to the decrease in activity. We can approach 2010 serenely in a economic environment we estimate will continue to be difficult.

We are confident that the action taken in 2009 will have a good impact on NEWTEC’s results in 2010 but this does not exclude caution in the present economic situation.

We feel that in spite of a slight upturn in projects in recent months and a well-filled order book our activity will be at the same level as 2009.

This seems realistic and we have adapted our organisation accordingly with possible new improvement rooms if necessary.

After the re-organisation in 2009 we see 2010 as a transition year in readiness for the recovery.

We have focused on 4 axes :

•Developing export sales on targeted areas

•Internationalising the NEWTEC group

•Boosting R&D activities on our product ranges

•Researching partners to extend our product range, as a commercial or capital partnership, in line with our « supplier of logistics solutions for industry» vision.

We are currently working on several projects …
