Pharmintech 2010 - Bologna

Pharmintech 2010

Bologna (Italy)

12 – 14 May 2010

Economic recovery is around the corner: Pharmintech showcases the best of the pharmaceutical-related industry

An international stage for an industry which in 2008 reported a 2% growth offsetting the effects of the economic crisis, Pharmintech is the exhibition dedicated to the pharmaceutical-related industry opening its doors in May at Bolognafiere (Bologna, Italy) hosted in pavilions 19 and 22. The positive performance of the Italian supply industry, widely represented at Pharmintech 2010, is matched by the growth of pharmaceutical production, reporting a 4.9% increase (data by Istat, the National Institute of Statistics) in July-September 2009 compared to the same period of the previous year.

2010 will see Pharmintech’s third staging. The important innovations featured by this edition will be all the more significant as they developed during a period of great evolution of the markets on which Italy ranks second worldwide both as manufacturer and exporter of pharmaceutical packaging: this specialization constitutes the core of the exhibition and, coupled with other key segments, makes of Pharmintech a unique showcase in Europe for the industry supplying the pharmaceutical, personal care and nutraceutical production. These industries generate an impressing demand of raw materials, processing and packaging technology, ancillary equipment and services. The news in store include the debut of the “contract packaging” area, developed as a consequence of a growing global trend in the pharmaceutical industry: contract manufacturing.

As of March 25th, less than two months from the opening, about 300 companies already confirmed their participation: 35% are from outside of Italy and 41% are new entries. These figures anticipate the success of the exhibition.

Pharmintech is therefore welcoming increasing percentages of international exhibitors. The two most represented countries are Germany, sharing European leadership in technology manufacturing with Italy, and Switzerland, highly specialized in pharmaceutical production. International exhibitors also include companies from primary non-EU markets such as the USA, China and Japan.

As for the product categories on display at Pharmintech 2010, as usual the exhibition will offer an exhaustive range of products and technology. Besides the two core industries of packaging (22%) and processing (23%) technology, the event will feature a complete display of all supply industries serving drug production including components, labeling, traceability and contract manufacturing, at its first appearance at Pharmintech.

Pharmintech 2010 is looked forward to from the eve of its official opening. On May 11th the most important personalities of the pharmaceutical world will gather in Bologna for the event organized by Ipack-Ima (like the exhibition) as a prestigious introduction to the event about to open its doors at Bolognafiere. The day before the official opening will feature the congress organized by ISPE and PDA, during which internationally renowned experts of the pharmaceutical industry will discuss the topic “Designing Quality. Efficiency and Sustainability into Pharmaceutical Processes”. ISPE is the leading worldwide association of pharmaceutical professionals; PDA is the prestigious international body dealing with the development, quality monitoring and regulation of pharmaceutical products. The program of speeches, still under completion, already includes international pharmaceutical specialists such as Beppe Mazzocchi (Merck & Co, Italy), Werner Gerber (FFS University, Switzerland), Marcello Pasquazzo (Sanofi-Aventis, Italy), Luca Arrighi (Foster Wheeler Italiana), Ulla Thomsen (Novo Nordisk, Denmark), Lars Munkøe (Exima, Italy), Marzio Mercuri (PolPharma, Poland), Federico Brugnoli (Icimsi/Supsi, Switzerland), Riccardo Luigetti (European Medicines Agency – EMA, UK), Guido Dietrich (GSKBio, Belgium), Letizia Caccialupi (Boehringer Ingelheim, Germany)The event will be held at the Royal Carlton Hotel, Bologna; the discussion will continue the following day during the exhibition.

The program of side events includes two more meetings of great relevance: on May 13th the Contract Manufacturers Group of Farmindustria plans a workshop on “The current status of contract production in Italy”; on May 14th the focus will be on “Drugs and Medical Devices: the new frontiers of packaging”, a round table discussion organized by the Italian Packaging Institute.

Pharmintech will also host delegates and buyers from 23 different countries. These include several delegations of buyers from major pharmaceutical companies of Eastern Europe (Croatia, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Hungary, Russia), the Mediterranean Basin (Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey) Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Mexico), Asia (China, South Korea, India) and the USA. The extensive international participation is generated by an intensive, far-reaching promotional campaign carried out by Ipack-Ima in cooperation with ICE - the Italian Trade Institute – and the Emilia Romagna Regional Government. In addition, in order to ensure support to the exhibition on the main target markets and maintain a strong relationship with the pharmaceutical business community the organizers have arranged presentations and promotional activities at the main international trade events worldwide.

Pharmintech is deeply rooted in the pharmaceutical industry as shown by the president of the exhibition Sergio Domp, leader of Farmindustria, who accepted the office for the second time. The pharmaceutical industry ensures its full support to the exhibition, like the most important trade associations and organizations including Farmindustria (the Italian association of pharmaceutical industrialists), leading president Domp to take up the commitment and accept the presidency for the second time. The exhibition enjoys the support of all the main associations of pharmaceutical professionals and manufacturers, whose backing will further increase the success of the event. Pharmintech’s previous edition held in 2007 hosted key personalities of the international pharmaceutical industry, including company owners, managers and decision-makers from 27 of the world’s top 50 pharmaceutical companies for turnover.

A few examples include Abbott, Amgen, AstraZeneca, Bayer, Baxter, Boehringer Ingelheim, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Lundbeck, Menarini, Merck, Novartis, Novo Nordisk, Pfizer, Procter & Gamble, Ratiopharm, Roche, Sanofi-Aventis, Schering-Plough, Servier, Solvay, Takeda, Teva, UCB, Wyeth. The participation of these pharmaceutical giants shows Pharmintech’s role as the reference event for Europe’s pharmaceutical industry comprising 2,314 companies, 336 based in Italy.

One of the exhibition’s added values is its location and strong integration in the Bologna area, the Italian “packaging valley”. It is the heart of the industrial district with the highest concentration of companies manufacturing drug processing and packaging machinery. The pharmaceutical industry is a feather in Italy’s cap and the excellence of its supply industry is one of Italy’s competitive advantages on the global marketplace.

“Pharmintech supports an industrial segment of great importance, both as an exhibition and by providing synergic marketing opportunities created by the organizers - says Ipack-Ima spa CEO Guido Corbella -. The exhibition is playing an increasingly crucial role as a strategic partner for a highly international business community. This strategy includes the Pharmintech Observatory, established two years ago – adds Corbella - with the objective to observe and survey the evolution of the pharmaceutical industry and provide decision-making tools to the members of its business community”.
