Slotted Idler Mounting Holes

Rigid frame CEMA conveyor idlers have mounting slots in the belt direction. Is there any reason why I could not use a slot in the mounting frame opposite the direction of the idler frame slots? I have some ideas why not, but I thought it would be interesting to hear from the forum. Has anyone tried this?

would you like me to tell you that you are putting the idler in backwards and not be able to tilt it up to replace the bad one you removed or walk away and put my feet up?

Huh?

I am just trying to mount three different width idlers on the same frame. I can have one idler set be a wide base, but I need a slot or another hole to accommodate the next size.

Its been a while, but I think the slots are there to aid in centering the idler on a flat surface solid deck belt mounting to aid in training it.

I mentioned the idler question from experience as two of my former coworkers were replacing a three roller troughing idler in a suspended incline steel supported frame many years ago and they tried for 5 minutes to install the new three idler set back on the support frame to replace the old one "they removed" and I just could not take it any more as I was laughing so hard I was crying.

I said "you boys would be able to put that idler in with a lot less effort if you turned that idler around as the mounting feet are shorter on one side to install and remove idlers under tension with and with out a load".

They did what I suggested and it worked and slid right in.

It would not have been so funny if they had not just taken that old idler out along with the others to replace it with the new one twenty minutes before.

I was thanked with the usual insults about my family history, heritage, etc., and bravado and of course they denied any problems with installing it afterward acting like the innocent angels who always did what they wanted when they wanted with no interference.

I told them they can always ask me for advice if they can not figure out how its done the next time.
