“Hydraulic Drive Systems – Solutions for Bulk Material Handling Applications”

Abstract

Hydrostatic drive has gone a long way in bulk material handling. Low power density made it universally acceptable in mobile machines. It is also popular in wide range of stationary equipments where speed and torque control, are of great importance. Low moment of inertia, high starting torque and smoothness add to other features.

The construction and mechanism characterise the features of hydraulic motors. Some motors can deliver very high torque at very low speed but have limitations at high speed. Others, which operate at very high speed deliver low torques but have ripples at low speed. Some motors are very compact and have extremely low power density but are not so efficient. Variation of torque at constant pressure is a unique feature of hydraulic motors but is not available with all types. In some cases motors become much efficient and configuration is advantageous when combined with gear boxes, especially planetary gear boxes. All these factors need to be considered for selection of hydraulic drives.
