World's Largest Bulk Handling Ports?

Posted in: , on 30. Oct. 2009 - 19:12

Hello all,

I'm wondering if anyone knows/could take a guess at/knows where to find info on the world's largest dry bulk handling ports. I'm looking for something like a list of the 10 or 15 largest. It's for a research project concerning global transportation of ore and minerals.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Dear Mr. Mike,

Well I do not have the list of world’s largest bulk material handling plants at port (although I know quite few number of such plants being in material handling profession). I can only mention some hints, which can help you to find out the information.

1) List out the prominent countries, and investigate where are their port facilities for bulk material handling. Big and or industrially advanced countries invariably have the large facilities for bulk material handling at port because it is necessity for keeping their industry running.

2) There are few number of manufacturers for large sized bulk material handling equipment at port. Refer to them or their literature about the port handling systems done by them.

Hello Mike,

I can only give you info on Europe. Based on stats from 2006, this is the top 20 :

1. Rotterdam

2. Hamburg

3. Dunkerque

4. Amsterdam

5. Antwerp

6. Taranto

7. Immingham

8. Gijon

9. Velsen / Ijmuiden

10. Ghent

11. Constanta

12. Marseille

13. Narvik

14. Ravenna

15. Riga

16. London

17. Tees & Hartlepool

18. Tarragona

19. Venezia

20. Tallinn

When you place these in a world ranking most of these ports will probably not even make it in the top 50. There's not a lot of mining left in Europe so dry bulk volumes aren't very large.

A good source of information is ESPO (www.espo.be) and maybe Eurostat can also help you with data about European ports.

Best regards,

Hans
