Moisture Control

Some time age, Drying Technology, Inc., patented a new method for controlling the moisture content of products by sensing the moisture content "inside-the-dryer" which reduces the dead time and thus the standard deviation of the product moisture exiting dryers, kilns, ovens, and the like. For products being sold by weight, this Delta T control system usually reduces the standard deviation a minimum 30%, thus the mean moisture content can be increased and more water sold without exceeding the upper moisture specification limit.

This new method is based on a mathematical model derived from first principles that relates the moisture exiting the dryer to the temperature drop of hot air after contact with the wet product and the production rate or dryer speed. It has been validated by over 300 successful installations on flash, rotary, spray, belt, fluidized-bed, and ring dryers. It works for batch as well as continuous drying and on direct and indirect drying. We recently developed a moisture sensor that we can sense the moisture of a product leaving a dryer, preheater, etc. (i.e., using the cooling curve), by taking two consecutive surface temperature readings on a line parallel to the conveyor flow. If you are tired of having to use a feedback moisture sensor signal that arrives too late for effective control, and you want a moisture sensor that does not require calibration, you might be interested in this system.
