Fire Fighting and Utility (DSS) Piping

Posted in: , on 24. Jun. 2009 - 18:09

Dear Sir,

For coal stockyard, we need to have dust suppression system as well as fire fighting system for our new port project.

Is it possible to have one common header pipeline for both these systems ?

In TAC - Fire protection Manual - there isn't any clause for the same that fire fighting sytem pipeline should be separate and can not be combined with any other utility pipings.

We just need to have an engineering solution that what can be operational problems if we have common pipeline for both these systems parallel to coal stockyard. Fire fighting hydrants and DSS sprinklers will be installed at regular intervals.

Please advice.

Greetings and salutations Maulesh Sejpal,

I viewed your posting and I wanted to respond to it..

You need to look at the end product:

What is the layout? what is the square footage-that is first on your shopping list and work your way back to the header pipe-not from the header pipe forward!!

(WE NEED A TOP VIEW DRAWING) as we are

throwing darts while wearing a blindfold in a

pitch black room again.

It all depends on your available water supply and its delivery volume and or if you have a water tower or booster pumps and or fire water ponds for supply.

Since you have not discussed pond storage or a water tower:

Remote control deluge guns may be a better more efficient answer using a sea water wet well intake system and bypassing the need for sprinklers- unless they are needed in buried draw down galleries

Standard municipal water lines are or may be 8 to 12 inches diameter and

deliver water for both fire fighting and commercial and domestic use. a pipeline may deliver up to and beyond 120 PSI(unregulated) with 400 to 750 gallons per minute or more to hydrants feeding mobile apparatus which deliver water at high pressure and volume in 1 to 3 inch lines and remote ladder mounted deluge guns on ladder trucks using Hale or Waterous brand fire pumps

Minimum desired flow is equal to all fire appliances delivering equal water flow and pressure at one time at a location.

It is entirely dependent upon the square foot of coverage per sprinkler head in a system; the sprinkler head should have the same flow and pressure as the head end as at the tail end.

Has fire suppression with foam even been discussed? It is a water and time saver especially dealing with coal anyway.

Dust control is another animal just as important.

Being:

HOUSEKEEPING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dust suppression at transfer points.

vacuuming stations at transfer points and other areas in general to vacuum coal spills being connected to a central cyclone and bin.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What if anything is to be done with the coal sludge coming off the scrapers? do you have a gutter system to collect coal dust and oil leading to an oil water separator tube skimmer in a lagoon hich collects the oil and scrapes it off the tubing while it is working?

You have not mentioned if you will be using sea water,

Not to name drop but Victaulic pipe and fittings are easily assembled for both jobs;

I have personally used the Victaulic pipe and pipe clamps. They save a huge amount of work and they can be assembled using local labor.

Victaulic pipe is quite often used for feeder water stand pipes and horizontal exposed pipelines to deliver fire sprinkler water or for deluge guns.

They have adapter fittings for just about every plumbing or gas need.

Its fine to bring water in but what about the waste water

from rain and dust suppression or fire fighting; are you simply draining it to the sea or is thier a sewer system planned or available?

google

(coal waste water runoff collection methods)

www.victaulic.com

(Hale fire pumps and systems)

(Waterous fire pumps and systems)

www.ansul.com

(deluge guns)

(fire underwriters)

(lloyds of london)

Its fine to ask but do your homework first;

the available budget (being estimated versus

actual cost-meaning cost plus contracts)

your fire local codes and your insurer if you

are not self insured will be the the last word.

All materials absorb heat if the temperature of the material is lower than the temperature of the heat source.

For flammable and combustible liquids, foam has been used as a fire-extinguishing medium. A stable aqueous foam can extinguish a flammable or combustible liquid fire by the combined mechanisms of cooling.
