Slurry pipeline design

Following test facilities and software are available in Fluid Mechanics Laboratory of IIT Delhi, India:

I. Bench scale tests

20 Kg of material is required to conduct bench scale tests for determining following parameters at different concentrations of slurry:

1. Rheology and rheological properties - shear stress and yield stress

2. Particle Size Distribution

3. Specific gravity of solids and slurry

4. Viscosity of slurry

5. Maximum permissible slope (angle of repose of slurry)

6. Static settled concentration

7. Terminal settling velocities of particles

8. Erosion wear

9. pH of slurry

10. Chemical analysis

II. Pilot plant loop tests

1000 Kg of material is required for slurry flow at different concentrations and flow velocities through 60m long pipe loop to determine the following design parameters:

1. Solids concentration profile

2. Pressure drop

3. Maximum and operating slurry flow rates

4. Critical deposition velocity

III. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) based software

This software is used to simulate slurry pipeline flow for computing design parameters accurately. These computations may be considered as alternate to the Step II, if the huge amount of solids required in pilot plant loop testing is not available. Different parameters determined using bench scale tests described in StepI are taken as input parameters in the software. The description of my software is available on the following webpage:

IV. Line elevation details and contouring of slurry pipeline are finalized based on detailed survey of terrain and economical analysis of different routes available for laying of slurry pipeline.
