Steep angle conveyors- cleats & side wall bonding strength with base belt

Posted in: , on 29. Oct. 2008 - 10:02

In many steep angle conveyors, the cleats ( buckets ) and the side walls are cold vulcansided with the base ( mother ) belt.

What should be the bonding strength between the two., i.e.,

1) bonding strength between cleat and the base belt

2) bonding strength between the side wall and the base belt ?

Please give the strength in N/mm.

Is there any standard for them ?

You will have to ask a conveyor belt manufacturere for that sort of proprietory information. The Malaysian rubber industry have a central association which might be inclined to help as well...for a fee. Then there's RAPRA in Shawbury, Shropshire, UK who will definitely charge you a fee for their often cursory attention.

The bonding strength obtained using a good quality cold vulcanisng adhesive on rubber to rubber is around 1 Kg/mm for 90 Degree peel.

Dear Mr.Rajagopal,

Is there any standard for them? Can you post any DIN reference, so that we have authentic information to talk to steep angle belt suppliers?

Dear Mr. Ganesh,

I don't have the DIN standards with me. I think DIN 22101 refers to Splice area of fabric Belts. The standards should be same for elevated beltings also. The splicing area only will change depending on the Belt rating. For a cold joint a bonding strength og 8-10 Kg/cm2 can be achieved. You can calculate the are of splice from this once the belt rating is known.

In the steep angle conveyors, the material being carried directly gives the load on the cleats (buckets).

If the peel off strength ( bonding strength) is not quite good, the buckets may come out after some time.

So the bonding strength will depend on

-material carried per cleat

-Time factor

-Number of contraction / expansion per cycle etc.,

So I request the experts to post their opinion to have standardisation on this subject

1) bonding strength between cleat and the base belt

2) bonding strength between the side wall and the base belt ?

Greetings and salutations SGanesh,

one question comes to mind, How can we have a verifiable standard for materials when the material to be moved is the unknown-meaning the type of material, volume carried, weight, size, impact loading?

I am afraid the cobra in the basket will never be the same one all the time every time though.

Your points are valid none the less. The ASTM and the various manufacturers organizations and OSHA and MSHA are the cats that must be herded unfortunately. I am afraid this is one of those situations that will require delicate surgery with every application of the known variables.

And a decision tree.

We use 12N/mm on test strips when trying to rip them off.

So Rajagopal is correct.

We use this (or fairly close to it) in SABS 1669 part II for the bonding of pulley lagging too.
