Kicking Up Dust

Posted on 21. Jun. 2008 - 11:54

Hi Ajeeth,

Good question. But, do you know what the regulations are? Can you properly brief the Technical Representatives on what is needed, or would be acceptable for your application? Or will you be buying blind?

Brush up on your understanding of Dust Control. See

I second what john has said with the utmost sincerity; the problem is water and its use in the UAE, not knowing how much you have to use is a big question and the the possibility of contracting rock lung disease is high with any aggregate not just limestone.

Dust control is simple and very easy with very low mounted low volume full cone water nozzles at crusher exit points and conveyor transfer points and what wins is simplicity and adequate coverage of dust creating points such as tranfer points and crusher discharges.

Spraying water on the feeder while delivering rock to your crusher works very well also for dust control-that is big help over here in the USA.

Using a bit more water is easier than trying to engineer a system that may not work very well depending on crusher plant volumes.

Do not forget that the spraying volume in a specific nozzle is costant no matter the increase in rock processed per hour.

If you want staying power with the water use a little "Dawn" dish soap and soda ash(washing soda)to make the water wetter by reducing its surface tension.

Crusher Dust Control Systems

We have made new regulations for all the quarries and crushers in the UAE to implement proper dust control systems to meet the required air quality and emission standards. The standards are similar to EPA. Many crushers have either water suppression or bag house dust collection system. Others do not have any effective dust control systems. So we need to get information from manufacturers who can install effective dust control systems for the crushing plants.

Greetings and salutations Ajeeth,

If you look on the web site here you will find a wealth of information regarding dust suppression and system manufacturers of same.

The Donaldson company is a world wide presence in fugitive dust control as an example.

Spraying Systems Inc. will be a big help as they are world wide as well.

Many crushing plant manufacturers also do dust suppression work for their systems.

The problem with filtration and vacuum dust collection systems of any type is that they will fail from wear via pin holes in fabric from impact of dust or filter canisters plug and door gaskets will fail and need to be replaced.

I believe you mean the Mine Safety and Health Administrations guidelines(Title Thirty/United States Code) for fugitive dust control during both crushing and screening of quarried rock

If you intend to contact a dust suppression specialist:

A complete invetory of physical plant or plants for crushing and screening systems must be determined/inventoried before you begin.

The above mentioned items are what they will need to determine your dust suppression needs if you intend to do business with them.

You have not mentioned if you will be making asphault make up sand-and this is a big if, as you will not want water in that rock at all.

But as I mentioned previously having full cone spray nozzles with a little dish soap and soda ash in the water mix will go a long way ; The idea is to knock down the dust before it has a chance to become airborne; crusher stations, conveyor transfer points,

and stacking conveyor discharges are where the most dust will be created.

If asphault and asphault make up sand is not an issue and all your conveyors are exposed.

A line of nozzles across the front of each transfer point tail pulley and crusher discharge will reduce the amount of dust generated considerably and reduce the airborne transmission of fugitive dusts.

The other option is enclosing all the conveyors and crusher dischages with all weather covers and enclosing the transfer points to contain the fugitive dust; it will make it more difficult to inspect the conveyors and transfer points every day and If a belt spill occurs it will create trouble as all the spill will be stuck in one area and will have to be physically shoveled or bucketed out of the transfer point to clear the mess to find the problem.

If your belts are cable supported the all weather covers will require more effort/work to install.

If they are steel supported and in good condition it will simply take time and labor.

If you are using mechanical splices for your conbveyor belts this also creates more problems as each splice will need to be caulked with silicone caulk on the top of the belt(aggregate side)to keep them from leaking dust as well.

Using sea water for suppresion is out of the question for cement as it will eventually ruin the cement etc.

You have not mentioned if your new regulations will, or do include emergency stop systems for belt shut downs either as this is a concern as both sides of the belts must have them.

As we do not have any idea about you total water situation for dust suppression use and that is a problem as well.

Local prevailing winds and tempratures are also unknown to me simply due to the fact that I have no idea what the height of your belt structures thier exposure and how they will be affected by winds/dust storms simply because of dust suppresion spray drift unless the nozzles are close to the conveyors; six inches above product height on the conveyor for example.

If you have pictures or drawings of your physical plant that will help a great deal.

We still do not have a lot of information from you and this is a problem/concern for me since you can easily obtain this type of information from any of the many local reputable equipment vendors in your part of North Africa.

We need to know more; or at least I do.

George, Lyn, John, Mr. Nordell my humble apologies if I have missed something, I hope this is not another fishing expedition.

From Fujairah to Ras al Khaimah the limestone is very soft and produces horrendous dust levels. Pollution can be seen from Masafi and Al Nhakeel townships, about 30km away. There were no regulatory pressures in 1997 & probably are none yet. Another earlier thread mentioned possible legislation in the UAE. Pehaps you can find that thread starter who might then be able to advise you on the progress made.

Re: Crusher Dust Control Systms

Dear Shri Ajeeth,

There are two aspects about the material crushing in crusher. Firstly often the crusher is required to crush the material so that it has unwanted fine size (dust) of least proportion in the product. The fines being generated will depend upon the type of crusher and its operational parameters.

The second aspect is the emission of dust into environment. The crusher have totally enclosed construction and thereby dust emission can only occur at the open end of the inlet chute and outlet chute i.e. upper end of the inlet chute and lower end of the outlet chute. For many of the items people refrain from adding moisture into feeding portion because it may interfere with the crushing function. So, at this location general preference is for dust emission control by dust extraction system. As for the open end below the crusher outlet one can use dust extraction system or dust suppression system, if it is permissible for the particular material.

Dynaset makes efficient dust suppression systems to mobile machinery.

System requires hydraulic system and works with oil pressure from 120 bars and oil flow 10l/min.

Water usage is minimized because system is making high pressure water fog and it reaches each dust particle from dusting material.

+ no muddy surroundings

+ possibility to point water spray directly into dust

+ one high pressure water pump can use easily 10 different nozzles in different places

+ small oil pressure and flow

+ compact system

+ works from hydraulics and is always ready to use when mobile machine works

+ cleaner air, better to breath etc.
