Fabric Belt width tolerances

Posted in: , on 7. May. 2008 - 12:42

Does anyone know of any standard or rules of thumb for squareness of fabric belt? We have a situation whereby a belt is within tolerance on overall width requirements (it is cut to suit) however has a slight curve along its length. ie it is shapped like a bananna. When we go to splice this belt end to end and pull it back into alignment I would expect to see differential tensions develop through cross section of the belt as one side will be a different length to the other. Any advice on possible rectification methods or an acceptance/rejection criteria would be appreciated?

Banana Belts

Hi Shawn Ryan,

We ordered a fabric belt for a refit during a plant shutdown. When it arrived and was laid out it was shaped like a banana. It would have been impossible to pull it straight and to train the belt. We had to sent it back, and schedule another shutdown.

In absence of any identifiable standard, you would be advised to set up your own tolerance definition for accepting or rejecting a belt from a Vendor.

John RZ is right... send it back and don't try and use it.

I tried it once thinking the banana would pull straight with time.

It never got the opportunity to pull straight as it never ran anywhere near properly so we abandoned it. The supplier replaced it with a straight one and then all was fine.

As far as I am concerned, straight is straight, and thats it.

Differential Stretch

Hi all,

It seems to me the problem is a limitation on the manufacturing process.

When the fibre strands are stretched in the weaving process the belt comes out straight. But when it is cut lengthways some of the inner strands have been stretched less that the outer ones. Release of internal stresses causes the half-belt to settle into a banana shape.

Was this belt cut down from wider width?

Is it possible if it was cut off one edge only, that this may cause problems or does this not need to be cut equally off both edges?
