Jaw or impactor....?

Posted in: , on 1. Jan. 2008 - 14:12

Hello Everybody..!

Wishing you all happy new year...

Just a small querry...what is the optimum reduction ratio of single rotor impactor....i know manufacturers claim that one can achieve minimum of 10:1....but end users say that practically one can achieve 6 to 7:1 at RATED capacity...if 10:1 reduction has to be acieved than one has to reduce the feed rate...this is all to restrict impactor from over stressing.

For the above feed rate, the gradation of material will be as specified by manyfacturer.

If we compair the reliability, reduction ratio and capacity of jaw and impactor then which one is the right crusher for primary crushing application?

regards,

Dear Sujith,

Whole thing depends on what you want to crush. Probably, it is basalt or gravel. Normally, Single rotor impactor can give a reduction ratio of 1: 10, provided the material is not too hard. Jaw Crusher would be 1: 6 or incase of softer material, even 8:1.

Impactor will usually give higher fines than Jaw Crusher [I do not know size of fines for your application]. Also, life of wear parts will be higher for Jaw Crusher than impactor.

If you could inform following, exact answer would be possible -

1. Material to crush and its hardness in mohs scale

2. Feeding size

3. Product size required

4. capacity required in TPH

Hi Ravindra,

I am just compairing jaw and impactor for any perticular application...like limestone, gabro or concrete recycling..

Basicaly I want to confirm whether the reduction ratio of more then 10:1 with impactors as claimed by impactor manufacturer is achievable?...I have impactors which is giving me just 6:1 reduction for limestone ( UCS = 60 mPa) at rated capacity.

Secondly, some manufacturers suggest jaw for primary reduction where as others suggest impactor for the same application..

Hi,

It will again depend on what feeding size you are using. Generally in india, 350 and below, an impactor is used. Above that , normally Jaw crusher is used for primary reduction.

Hi

my maximum feed size is 1500 mm concrete blocks for recyccling purpose.....and I think that Jaw is right equipment for this from capital investment, reliability, cost of operation point of view...but some manufacturers have suggested that impactor would be right equipments saying that it has more than 10:1 reduction ratio but at the same time they have introduced secondary crusher also for further reduction....as far as i know impactor can give just 7:1 ratio at rated capacity and at the same time equipment is not over stressed...

my question is that if impactor is just giving 7:1 ratio in reality then why one should opt for impactor?

now one should not say that impactor will give clean steel at discharge after crushing....i am ready to compromise for that..?????

Generally, for hard material such as concrete blocks, impactor should not be used, as wear and tear will be very high. For such hard material, impactor will give less crushing ratio.

Generally it would be used as a compromise, if people want to make it a portable equipment.

For soft stones, coal, limestone etc, impactor can give much higher ratios and it is a suitable machine there.

For this application, you should use jaw crusher only. Relatively it will be much less maintainance prone machine

Jaw Vs Impactor

both will do job.

Why one vs other.........besides all the points covered above:

Impactor will typically yield MORE CUBICAL PRODUCT which is very desirable to meet certain specifications for angular product.

Jaw will typically yield MORE SLABBY elongated product which is less desirable for meeting certain specifications.
