Coperion at K 2007

Increased Throughput, Higher Purity, Expanded Customer Service

Stuttgart, August 2007 – As the worldwide market and technology leader in compounding equipment and bulk-material systems, the Coperion Group based in Stuttgart, Germany will exhibit a cross-section of its product line-up at Stand C33 in Hall 14 at the upcoming K 2007 trade fair. Numerous new developments and improvements have been integrated into the range with the aim of boosting cost-efficiency, enhancing product quality, and simplifying operator tasks. One example is the modular ZSK 40 system that will be displayed in Düsseldorf. Assembled from compact modules, it reflects outstanding compounding know-how and bulk handling expertise packed into a thoroughly tested production system.

MEGAvolume PLUS – Reflecting 50 years of ZSK experience

Since the introduction of its ZSK series exactly 50 years ago, Coperion Werner & Pfleiderer GmbH & Co. KG of Stuttgart/Germany has been continuously refining and upgrading its range of compounding extruders featuring co-rotational, closely intermeshing twin screws. As an innovative highlight on the imminent trade fair, the company will be presenting its ZSK MEGAvolume PLUS high-performance compounding system. Compared to the proven ZSK MEGAvolume unit launched in 2001, the new system provides significantly increased throughput, a wider operating window, and superior flexibility.

Like its predecessor, the ZSK MEGAvolume PLUS features a process section with a large free volume (determined by the ratio Do/Di = 1.8, where Do = outer, Di = internal diameter of the screws). Moreover, its designers have found a way to increase the specific torque from 8.7 to 11.3 Nm/cm3, equalling the performance of the ZSK MEGAcompounder. It is thus possible to compound feed-limited products with high energy consumption at high throughput rates using the necessary high energy input. Since the mean shear rate during compounding is reduced by the large flight depth and the high filling level (both contribute to high output rates), the screw speed can be increased further more without negative effects to product quality, resulting in again increased output rates. Typical applications of the new ZSK MEGAvolume PLUS include, e.g.

•rigid PVC and plasticized PVC compounding – while on existing ZSK MEGAcompounder PLUS systems throughput is limited by the feed capacity, the ZSK MEGAvolume PLUS provides 40% higher throughput rates for similar size;

•compounding of halogen-free, flame-retardant cable compounds based on polyolefins, as well as other filled compounds – given the new system's flexibility, such products can be run at high throughputs without modifying the machine configuration.

At the upcoming K 2007, a ZSK MEGAvolume PLUS machine with 76 mm screw diameter will be exhibited. In addition, Coperion Werner & Pfleiderer will be showcasing its newly developed gear pumps, exhibiting a size MP360 unit designed to deliver up to 33 tonnes/h polyolefins. The presentation of compounding equipment will be rounded out by the laboratory extruder ZSK 18, which has now proven its merits for well over a year, as well as by the die-plate of a large underwater pelletizing system and the Standard Twin Screw Compounder STS 65 developed jointly by Coperion Werner & Pfleiderer and Coperion Keya of Nanjing/China.

Innovative solutions for all materials handling tasks

Bulk-material handling and logistics systems for the plastics industry (and beyond) are the specialty of Coperion Waeschle GmbH & Co. KG of Weingarten/Germany. The company has been continuously expanding its expertise and market leadership in this segment.

At the "K" trade fair in Düsseldorf, Coperion Waeschle will be relying on a large-screen 3D presentation for the first time ever to demonstrate its extensive plant engineering expertise and in-depth knowledge of all process steps in the materials handling chain. The company's full range of capabilities in materials handling technology – whether in plastics manufacturing, compounding or processing – is to be impressively demonstrated. Trade fair visitors will be taken on a sweeping visual "experience" tour which covers every single process step, including the operation of rotary and diverter vales, blenders, elutriators and filters, etc.

Coperion Waeschle's materials handling plants cover the needs of the entire plastics industry, yet every system is customized to individual user specifications for its given application case. This holds equally true for large installations as used in polyolefin manufacturing as for medium to smaller systems, e.g., for compounding and processing engineering plastics or PVC.

In its development and construction of such equipment, the company brings to bear not merely its sound background in process technology but also its extensive experience and project management staff resources, plus a team of plant engineering experts capable of rising to the most demanding challenge. At its unique technical center, large-scale trials of selected equipment can be conducted under near-real-life conditions. Coperion Waeschle's status as the global technology and market leader in materials and logistics systems was recently confirmed with the largest purchase order in its corporate history. In the United Arab Emirates, Coperion Waeschle will erect materials handling systems for a polypropylene and polyethylene production facility with an annual output in excess of 1.3 million tonnes.

At the trade fair, the company will also be presenting materials handling innovation on a global scale that comes out of its own research and development laboratories. Newly developed rotary and diverter valves which can be cleaned fully automatically, without any dismantling, will be exhibited in Düsseldorf. Enabling users to meet the most exacting standards of purity in materials handling with a minimum input of time and cost, these cleaning-in-place (CIP) components have been certified as CIP-capable by the European Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG). Additional exhibits will include the Bulk-X-Change® bulk materials heat exchanger, as well as a range of rotary valves, diverter valves, and slide vales for bulk material handling applications.

Service: Closeness to the customer is key to growth

The Coperion business unit "Global Service" will be presenting its global customer support network to K 2007 visitors. Focusing on improved closeness to the customer, this network has already been expanded to a current total of 27 service centres. More service centres have recently been added. Long appreciated by customers in traditional markets in Western Europe and the U.S., this local service capability has also evolved into a key asset for the company as a whole in emerging markets such as Russia, China, the Middle East and India. Today, Coperion's global customer support organization comprises more than 235 specially trained professionals, including about 135 service technicians. A worldwide service hotline provides support and technical advice around the clock while also allowing customers to order equipment parts, even on weekends and legal holidays. The industry's largest spare parts warehouse forms the "backbone" of this spare part supply capability.

Global Service provides the operators of Coperion compounding equipment and bulk-materials systems with an extensive line-up of services geared to meet individual customer needs and expectations. The options range from straightforward equipment inspections to full-service maintenance contracts covering inspections and routine upkeep to maximize the cost-efficiency and availability of production equipment. In addition, Global Services assist Coperion customers when it comes to identifying improvement potentials and to develop and implement plant upgrades.

The Coperion Group, together with the companies Coperion Werner & Pfleiderer, Coperion Waeschle, Coperion Keya, Coperion Hartmann and 20 sales and service companies, is an international market and technology leader for compounding systems and bulk-material systems. Coperion designs, supplies and maintains systems, machines and components for the plastics, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and food industries. In the 2006 financial year, Coperion achieved sales to the tune of 446 million euros, and employs around 2,100 staff as at 31.12.2006.
