Use of zinc plated fasteners with SS sheets

Hi friends

I wish to confirm from the learned forum if I can recommend cold zinc plated carbon steel fasteners for stainless steel sheet metal joints e. g. conveyor covers / lids / flanges of elevator leggings etc. Reason being sheer economics.

If yes what should be ideal plating thickness in microns.

location is humid environment on the river side, just 10 kms before joining sea and temperatures range from zero degree celsius to 48 degree celsius.

Best Regards

Another question would be if you are prepared to accept ferrous fasteners (albeit protected) on your stainless steel equipment, why wouldn’t you use similar in lieu of the stainless steel all round for economics?

Thanks Lyle....I am unable to get to your point. When I say carbon steel it means Ferrous material only and protected by cold zinc plating. Pls elaborate.

I think what Lyle was saying is that if it's OK to use zinc plated fasteners in the interests of economy, why not use zinc plated steel for the conveyor covers etc.

Certainly if I was constructing the covers from stainless steel then I'd be using stainless steel fixings! Zinc plated fixings will at some point corrode and stain up the nice stainless steel covers.

Sorry for the ambiguity, though my intentions were as Designer suggested (if you are prepared to use zinc plated fasteners, which we assume would be cheaper than stainless steel, why not use zinc plated sheet steel for your covers etc?).

As for your original question, I am not sure. Though have a look at the periodic table for relative “reactivity” between the two elements (high potential = bad, probably). A bit out of my depth (even more than usual..).

Thanks again dear Lyle / Designer.....In fact that was the dilemma. Not that I was unaware of the cost relativity / compatibility.

As opposed to the cost difference between CS zinc plated / SS fasteners which comes to approx 1:5, the cost difference of using 200 grade Aus tenitic SS(J4) is just about 1:2. refer tap - Cr-Mn AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEELS Cost Effective Alternative to 18/8 Type AISI - 304 on(http://www.jindalstainless.com/products.html#hot-rolled)

More over Zinc plated sheet metal available here is not upto desired quality in terms of zinc plating( upto 60 microns only) which is insufficient for marine grade applications as also in complete thickness range(1.5 / 2/2.5/3/5/6mm).

I have option of doing thermal zinc wire spray coating of upto 100-120 microns on such sheet metal as hot dip galvanizing after fabrication will distort the final product. The easy availability of complete range of fasteners in SS is also debatable.

I, for sure will never use plain CS on SS.

Thus thought of cross checking with my fellow forum members.

In my experience anything relying on zinc as a protection will eventually break down and end up with a rusty component.

Zinc plated fixings with stainless steel is "spoiling the ship for a ha'porth of tar" !!

Beware that many of the affordable stainless steels are not brine resistant. Our beloved 3CR12 is not recommended by the suppplier, no less, for installation near salty waters.

For conveyor covers, lids etc why not be adventurous & try GRP. like the boat builders do? If you're prepared to accept non-ferrous fastners. Just get the GRP UV protected.

What's the rest of the stuff made from if you are only worried about the covers?
