Comparison between trough and capsule conveyor

We need advise from Hon. members of this forum about the best suitable system for handlng coal.The main specs.for the system are as follows-

System no. 1

Material to be conveyed -Coal @6000 tph,width of flat conv. is 2200 mm,speed 4-4.5 m/s with troughing angle of 45deg.

System No. 2

Capsule Conveyor having same capacity and material as mentined

above.

Hi anil seth,

You are certainly trying to be innovative, and thinking outside the box. That is good. Don't get shut into preconceived ideas.

Prof Marcus has done a lot of work on capsule conveying, at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. I think Bulk Solids Handling magazine published a whole book on the subject. Check in your technical library.

Capsules sound great as an idea, but it seems to me it is like using mini-skips, or a rail system of some kind. I think the amount of air you would need might kill the economics.

But by all means keep asking questions. That's the way to get new practical ideas - even if the end result looks nothing like the original question, it still helps you to define the parameters.

Handling Coal With A Pneumatic Capsule Pipeline

In theory Pneumatic Capsule Pipelines could handle your requirement. To be economical the system must be 10 km or more. In practice your quantity is so large (over 40 million tonnes per year) that a rail system would be more practical. For example the pipe itself would be over 2500 mm in diameter. The capital cost would be very large.

Dear Weaver, Thanks for your advise.In India, lots of development are taking place, particilarly in Port,Mining and Power sectors there is a need for similar type of system. Suppose some one would like to put 500 mw power plant near the port and this plant is about 8-10 km from the port.You need around 5 mtpa coal to run 500 mw plant.Now this fellow either has to pay US$ 8 per tonne for handling the coal to port authorities or to make his own captive port which is not advisable.Single pipe conveyor can not handle more then 2000 tph,if the capacity increse up to 4000 tph then two pipe conveyors have to be installed.So in this case I think Capsule system will be viable.

I need your advise on the same.

Dear AnilSeth

5,000,000 tonnes per annum is 5,000,000 t/a / 24 hours per day / 350 days per year equals 596 tonnes per hour. Most of the time this is the limit of capacity of a Pneumatic Capsule Pipeline. This pipeline might be 1 metre in diameter. This is most likely a Twin Line System. Another product can be transported in the same or opposite direction similtaneously without mixing. The other product can be differect bulk density.

2000 tonnes per hour is 2000 t/hr X 24 hour / day X 350 days per year equals 16,800,000 tonnes per year. 4000 t / hour is twice that amount.

The distance of 8 to 10 km is an easy distance to transport any thing.

We use 350 days per year to allow for maintenance of all/everyones equipment and vacation days.

Dear Weaver, Thanks for your valuable advise.Recently I have presented my papers on requirement of high capacity equipment for 25 mtpa coal unloading terminal at Inernational Conference,Mumbai.Please note that similar type of terminal is coming at Mundra,Gujarat state of India.In this terminal the jetty is about 5 km (5000m) in side the shore,the length from stockpile to jetty comes out approx. 6 km.Now, I think in this case it is adviseable to go for Capsule.I also need your advise here about type of conveyor,client is thinking to put trough steel chord belt conveyor,I think capsule conveyor will have an edge because-

1. Due to its less area as compare to flat conveyor, their is lot of savings in Jetty construction which is about 5 km long.

2. Less pollution.

3. Can use return side,

About power saving I can not comment.

Dear Weaver, what about entering in India with this type of systems.In past I have worked on pipe conveyor project at Dahej which is about 3.2 km long and this system is state of art,working perfectly for the last so many years.At this moment I am working as a freelancer as a material handling man in port sectors and working/worked with companies like-Royal Haskoning,Fredrick-R-Harris(Mounsel),CES and Halcrow
