Martin Engineering’s Hutter named

to Illinois FutureGen Taskforce

(Neponset, Illinois) - Scott Hutter, President and CEO of Martin Engineering, has been named by Illinois Governor Rod R. Blagojevich to the FutureGen for Illinois Task Force, a group focused on bringing to Illinois the $1 billion project to design, build, and operate the world’s most advanced coal-fueled power plant.

The FutureGen project, developed by the U.S. Department of Energy and the FutureGen Alliance, a consortium of large coal producers and energy generators, calls for the development of the “coal plant of tomorrow.” This plant would use coal gasification technology to produce 275 megawatts of electric power—enough electricity to power 150,000 homes—with near-zero emissions. The plant will capture and store deep underground the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2), and produce hydrogen for fuel cells and other industrial purposes.

“FutureGen is a first of its kind opportunity that will revolutionize energy production and pave the way for the next generation of power plants,” Hutter said. “A reliable supply of energy is vital to the state of Illinois, as well as the rest of the nation. On behalf of Martin Engineering and speaking for my colleagues in the Illinois business and industrial community, we pledge our full support to demonstrate Why the World Needs FutureGen, and Why FutureGen Needs Illinois.”

Illinois has two locations—Tuscola and Mattoon, both in east central Illinois—listed among the four finalists for the site of the project; the other finalists are located in Texas. The FutureGen Alliance will make the final site selection in mid-to-late 2007, with construction beginning in two to three years.

The FutureGen for Illinois Task Force is a bipartisan collaboration of elected officials and prominent members of the state’s business, energy, environmental, academic, and labor communities who support bringing the project to Illinois.
