At our DAP plant there is installed metal cord belt having following specifications:

- Type : Transtherm Metal cord M500 TEA (6+3)

- Make semperit france

Flow rate : 250~350 T/H

Speed 1 m/s

width : 1200 mm

We are planning to replace this belt with Mutiply belt of folowing specifications:

- EP 500 / 3 (6+3)

Belt is equipped with a vertical gravity tensioner.

Can you suggest that it will be OK, specially this type of tensioner is ok for multy ply belt or not.

Regards

Irfan

Dear Mr. Irfan,

Your information does not mention the belt width. If you want to replace steelcord belt with EP belt then you have to see the suitability of that belt on following considerations :

1) Carcass strength adequacy to support the load

2) Carcass ability to withstand the impact of the lumps.

3) Carcass suitability for troughing.

4) The existing pulley diameter suitability for new belt.

5) Carcass tensile strength and working load adequacy for the conveyor. This is to be seen with reference to the tensile strength at joint. In all probabilities joint efficiency for steel cord belt would be 1 whereas the joint efficiency for 3 ply belt would be only 66% of the carcass strength.

6) The take-up stroke for textile fabric belt would be more. This will have a significant effect if conveyor is long.

As your replacement happens to be in fertiliser plant, where material is likely to be granular, issue of serial no.2 may not be relevant. Issue serial 1 and 3 depends upon the belt width.

Reference to a trade name Transthermal suggests it to be a heat resistant belt. Beware that the fabric as well as the rubber must be thermally rated for hot duty.

The M500 suggests a belt steel cord breaking strength that may be in accordance with DIN and ISO N/mm of a metal cord. The steel cord working strength is normally is in proportion to the typical safety factor SF = 6.7:1. This yields a working strength of 74.6 N/mm.

A fabric belt typically has a SF = 10:1 with a working strength of 50 N/mm.

Thus, the steel cord has 50% higher working temporal rating if I interpret the referenced strengths correctly. You must check to see if the working strength will be exceeded

Dear Irfan

EP 500/ 3 is not equivalent to st-500

EP 800/4 will be Equivalent to St-500 rating

For checking suitablity of EP-500/3 any desiner will require minimum following information

belt width

capacity

length

lift

skirt length

nos and locations of drive
