Dear Balvindar,

What type of screen it was and what was the cut size?

Can we really call it a screen or a grizzly?

Where can I get more details?

Warm regards

KS Dilip

The SIMPLICITY ENGINEERING company ( a superb 80 year old company) makes an 8' wide x 24' long HORIZONTAL or LINEAR motion screen.

They manufacture a one deck 4 total 120mm diameter bearings running on two shafts with gears between the two shaft driving.

They manufacture a two or double deck unit with 4 total 160 mm bearings but, ONLY after special consultation with the factory. They always want to triple check the application to ensure they build the MINIMUM B-10 bearing life into the assembly.

These type of units would handle feed materials that DO NOT EXCEED 8 inches as the TOP Or Maximum size. If larger than that the material POUNDS OR BEATS the snot out of the machine and abuses the bearing life, sideplate life, crossmembers, etc. A big inclined 4 BEARING on single shaft machine would FAIR MUCH better at say 15 to 20 degree incline. GRAVITY helps relieve the stress and strain of MECHANICALLY moving the material that is needed with a LINEAR MOTION SCREEN.

When you are at ZERO DEGREES on a linear motion it is tough sledding.........(NOTE: by the rules you are allowed to incline a linear motion screen to a max of 10 degrees of inclination by the rules) SECOND NOTE: if you raise the LINEAR by some angle of degree, you MUST change the TIMING ANGLE on the gearset to compensate for this, so you end up stroking at plus minus 45 degree TIMING ANGLE.

LASTLY, the reason we do not see HUGE LINEAR motion screens ...is they are MECHANICAL timebombs.....they are subject to running HOT AS A PISTOL, MECHANCIAL BREAKDOWN, and a hand full at the least. There are some really big vibrating LINEAR screens in the OIL SANDS,,,,, and the size is still in the 8 x 24 range but, they have 4 vibrating shaft drives on them. ......AND YES, they are a fistful of mechanical problems to run and maintain.

Schenck Australia built 4 x 11.5 m screen that replaced the Krupp screen. Weight of the screen was about 60t.

The Australian coal industry is increasingly moving towards very large banana screens for ROM classifying and heavy media drain & rinse dutues. These large screens have become fairly common & many of the mechanical issues have becomed ironed out with quite long service lives.

In both applications top size is usually ~50 mm and up to 4.2m of screen width.

Lengths are up to ~8.5 m.

Tonnages are up to 1000 tph of coal depending on the size distribution & cut point required.

The manufacturers are:

Metso Minerals; Ludowici MPE & Schenck.

Metso also custom built a horizontal linear screen for Freeport mine colloquially known as the super screen to fit into a space restricted SAG mill discharge. Here each screen may treat up to 3000 tph of -100 mm slurry (gold / copper ore).

This screen I believe is the largest in the world wide at this type of duty (~5m wide i think from memory), but they do pay in terms of maintenance. A screen may only last a year and with 5 installed units there is a dedicated spare and usually at least another being re-built at any one time.

ccrusty

The freeport superscreen is 3.6m x 7.3 DDLH and the weight is about 34 T - I did design this screen when working for Svedala. It is big but still smaller then schencks 60T.

Ziggy, valuable as your input was in the team that designed the Freeport Superscreen I think it is a bit ambitious to say that you designed it.

To put the record straight the screen was designed by a tean of designers at Svedala (now Metso Minerals), and as with all such designs its development continues to this day making it a very valuable asset at Freeport.

Neil

To put the record straight - I was the engineer who was doing the calculations on the Freeport superscreen with Andrew double checking the results.

General Kinematics Corporation has built a 10' X 20' handling copper ore installed in Chile, but can basically build any size screen you want. All our equipment is custom engineered using two mass drives, and extra-heavy duty to last much longer than similar brute force units. If you would like more information, please goto our website at:

Dear Sir,

I can advise You to a good company with a lot of experience buliding large vibrating machines. For example a 3200 x 10 000mm double deck "banana screen" for coal. I would advise You to have a look at their web page: www.ife-bulk.com
