Buhler U.S.A.: Close to customers

Buhler has been present in the U.S.A. since 1924 and a reliable partner and supplier of top-notch process technologies to this day.

The U.S. state of Minnesota, which borders on Canada in the north, has been the base of Buhler in the country of unlimited opportunities since 1957. It fulfills all the common clichs that the average person may have of this area: heaps of snow in winter, the source of the Mississippi River, flat moraine landscapes, vast fields, cattle breeding, an annual war dance contest for Indians, and of course high–rise buildings in the Twin City of Minneapolis / St.Paul. The economy is dominated by agriculture and the associated food processing industry, which settled on the banks of the Mississippi to power its mills and factories. Today, the state is still home to large food corporations such as General Mills and Pillsbury. Their presence prompted Buhler early on to establish a second U.S. company in the Midwest in addition to its original site in New York (set up in 1924). Today, North America is being served from a dozen sites in the U.S.A., Canada, and Mexico. With its long history on the continent, Buhler U.S.A. is already a traditional U.S. company - enjoying the same decade–long level of customer confidence that Buhler Europe has enjoyed for generations.

7/24 service

Today, Buhler U.S.A. is headquartered in Plymouth, a suburb of Minneapolis. Unlike competitors, Buhler operates manufacturing facilities in the U.S.A.. Both the production plant and the offices are located in the same, freshly remodeled building. Buhler North America currently employs about 200 persons. Their common goal is to offer customers competitive and cost–effective process technology along with perfect services. Buhler is viewed as a reliable partner in the U.S.A.. The Group generates roughly the same amount of business with upgrading and retrofitting existing facilities as with turnkey projects. Minneapolis operates its own roll overhaul service, allowing perfect reconditioning of roller mills.

Buhler U.S.A. offers its customers a dependable standard 7/24 service to maximize the uptime of their production facilities. To be prepared for every contingency, Buhler Minneapolis maintains a generously stocked spare parts inventory and will manufacture urgently needed components itself. If time is not so pressing, parts are ordered from Uzwil or another global manufacturing site of the Buhler Group. Even complex special–purpose items can be supplied to customers within a few days.

Always at the forefront

Buhler is the acknowledged technology leader also in the U.S.A., not least due to its extensive process expertise. To remain at the forefront of engineering and process technology, Buhler U.S.A. invests in research and training, both of its own staff and of customer employees. Buhler Die Casting has estab-lished its own training center in Minneapolis in addition to a showroom. Customers, including those from the automotive industry, appreciate this service. In the medium term, Buhler aims to achieve a die casting market share of 50 percent. This goal is not at all far–fetched, since Buhler Die Casting is considered a financially powerful technology leader in the U.S.A.. But also other customer segments are offered opportunities to improve their profits by teaming up with Buhler: Members of the printing inks & paints industry can often be found experimenting in the Grinding & Dispersion lab, also with Buhler innovations in the field of nanotechnology.

Resourceful experts

The laboratory boasts the latest Buhler developments on a laboratory scale. Buhler engineers will then upscale the laboratory results to commercial dimensions. Buhler experts are just as creative when it comes to dealing with U.S. peculiarities in the area of nutrition. Customers approach Buhler with new ideas on how to differentiate themselves from their competitors in the domestic market - and Buhler provides the process expertise to turn these ideas into a reality. This creates close partnerships in which Buhler and its customers join forces to develop new

products. Here is one example out of many: Together with the pasta experts from Uzwil, Buhler U.S.A. developed a special type of "low–carb" pasta for the Dreamfields company.

As elsewhere, too, energy costs in the U.S.A. are constantly nibbling away at customers‚ profits. The cost–cutting ideas suggested by Buhler are a welcome remedy to correct this situation. For example, there is a trend to use regrowing raw materials for power generation - a promising market for Buhler. This reduces the dependence of the U.S.A. on crude oil and helps transform agricultural surpluses into profitable fuels for heating and for powering vehicles. On the other hand, Buhler has also always been a major player in the processing of crude–based raw materials such as PET.

Lower cost - higher throughput

Cost–cutting Buhler plant layouts are in high demand in all industries. They allow customers not only to conserve energy, but also to reduce their maintenance expenses. In addition, customers can achieve higher outputs within a smaller building space. Output and throughput are key words for American customers. Not only the crop growing areas are enormous in this country, but also the size of industrial installations. U.S. customers seek reliable, rugged production systems offering them extremely high throughputs and innovative solutions to their ideas, which often trigger global trends.

At the same time, the rise in end consumers‚ quality awareness in the U.S.A. is almost outpacing the increase in the stringency of legal sanitation standards. One such area is animal feed manufacture, where the Buhler HYSYS high–capacity pelleting system is becoming increasingly accepted. The installation is equipped with a hygienizing system (hence the name HYSYS) and is meeting with growing success in the U.S. feed industry.

For demanding customers

Exacting petfood providers have also discovered the strengths of Buhler. Buhler extrusion processes are globally acknowledged to offer the best process technology. They enable the production of high grade petfoods. The growing functional foods industry in the U.S. is finding an experienced and efficient partner in Buhler. Especially research laboratories in the food processing industry welcome the expert knowledge and laboratory facilities of Buhler in order to maintain their successful market positions. Beside the market leaders and global players, many mid size and innovative businesses choose Buhler as a partner.

Counterfeits and time zones

It is annoying, but inevitable for a technology leader: Many competitors have no scruples to copy the design of Buhler equipment and to have the counterfeits manufactured in low-wage countries. However, the quality of these products leaves very much to be desired, for the expert knowledge of Buhler staff is all but impossible to copy. What cannot be copied at all are the good personal relationships that Buhler employees have with their

customers - and therefore Buhler`s excellent customer service. Maintaining these relationships in America requires careful planning. Unlike their

European col-leagues, Buhler staff in the U.S.A. cannot simply jump into the car to see customers. Most trips are by plane. Another hurdle is the differences in time. Time zones of several hours exist even within the United States itself. And when you make a phone call from the U.S. to Uzwil, you should never forget the seven hours‚ time difference. But thanks to Internet, FedEx, and video conferencing, this has ceased to be a problem today.
