The Mersey Docks & Harbour Company purchases an 1800 t/h Siwertell ship unloader

A new high capacity screw-type ship unloader has been ordered for The Seaforth Grain Terminal in Liverpool, U.K.

In future, bulk carriers of up to 75,000 dwt will be discharged at the terminal with unloading capacities of up to 1800 t/h.

After careful evaluation of various types of dry bulk ship unloaders, The Mersey Docks & Harbour Company awarded the contract to BMH Marine, Sweden in September 2005. The evaluation included but was not limited to the rated unloading capacity, through-the-ship capacity, power consumption and operational costs.

The contract includes the design, manufacture, delivery to site and installation of the continuous, screw-type Siwertell ship unloader.

The heavy duty Siwertell unloader of model S -790 D will handle grain and maize at The Seaforth Grain Terminal with a rated capacity of up to 1800 t/h from ships of up to 75,000 dwt. In addition soya beans will be handled at up to 1700 t/h. The efficiency of the design is also expected to result in a significant improvement in Seaforth’s overall through-the-ship unloading rates.

The state of the art electrical control system of the unloader comprises an information technology module known as the Siwertell Monitoring system with remote support function, as well as an Anti Collision module automatically overriding the operator in case of a potential collision with the ship, and a Semi Automatic Unloading module generating an operator-friendly atmosphere and a safe, efficient and environmentally friendly operation.

The new ship unloader will be delivered in major pre-assembled units for final assembly on site. Commercial operation at The Seaforth Grain Terminal is planned to commence in mid September 2006.

The order was won against strong international competition and is only one of several significant contracts successfully concluded by BMH Marine during the past six months for the supply of ship unloaders.

With these latest orders, BMH Marine remains one of the leading worldwide suppliers of marine-related dry bulk handling equipment and systems for port and terminal operators worldwide.
