Refurbished Nordberg crushers just the job for Peruvian dam project

A refurbished crusher line ensures material continuity at a Peruvian dam project expected to demand 2 million m3 of crushed material for the dam’s concrete production. The dam is being built by Firth Industries Peru S.A. and located at the Cerro Verde copper mine in Southern Peru.

Forming part of a USD 850 million expansion of the Cerro Verde copper mine in Southern Peru a refurbished Nordberg crusher line from Metso Minerals ensures material continuity throughout construction of 2 million m3 dam project. Current copper production at Cerro Verde is approximately 100,000 t/year. On completion of the expansion, copper production will initially be approximately 300,000 t/year.

Firth Industries Peru S.A, a New Zealand based concrete company, runs several quarries in Peru. After winning the contract for the dam building at the Cerro Verde copper mine, the company opted to refurbish some existing equipment made available at a recently rearranged and streamlined operation at its La Gloria Quarry in Lima, Peru.

The crushing line at the dam site will comprise two primary crushers, two secondary crushers and two triple deck screens, all supplied by Metso Minerals. A primary crusher, a Nordberg C80 jaw crusher, as well as one of two secondary Nordberg HP200 cone crushers, have approximately 10 years of uninterrupted service.

“We have had no problems with the Nordberg crushers,” says Ing. Jorge Luis Rodriguez, Aggregate Operations Manager at Firth Industries Peru S.A, “So we opted for refurbishing them.”

“When we refurbish a crusher, we basically put the clock back to zero,” says Fernando Samanez, Product Manager at Metso Minerals in Peru. “We have strict quality and procedure manuals for the work. This results in the crusher having the same dimensions and tolerances as when the machine came out from the factory.

The main parts exchanged were the mainframe, adjustment rings and heads. The crushers virtually become as good as new. This ensures high availability and no future problems with linings, etc,” concludes Mr Samanez.

The Nordberg C Series jaw crushers are based on a modular, non-welded frame construction. This design offers the highest possible fatigue strength, reliability and numerous mounting possibilities. The crusher also features high-quality cast steel components and premium spherical roller bearings, for high crusher availability, cost-efficient crushing and low cost per ton.

The HP200 features a patented combination of higher speed and throw, which increases the machine’s power rating and throughput capability. HP Series cone crushers have the highest capacities for their size in the industry.

The Nordberg HP series have wear protection of all crusher components for low maintenance costs. This includes protection of replaceable head ball, mainframe seat liners, mainframe pin bushings, countershaft box frame ring, counterweight guard, mainframe liners, and the dead-bed feed hopper.

La Gloria Quarry

Firth operates a number of quarries throughout Peru, the largest being the La Gloria Quarry in Lima, where the crushers and screens are mounted and prepared for transport to the Cerro Verde gold mine.

“We produce 200 m3/hour at La Gloria, in four different fractions,” says Jorge Luis Rodrigues, adding, “The main fractions are –40 mm and –28+19mm, which accounts for 85% of the production. We use 140m3/day of the aggregate in our own concrete production.”

The quarry has been in operation for forty years and has reserves for another fifty year.

“Of course the excavated material will be coarser over time,” says Jorge Luis Rodrigues.

“Today we have two types of rock, one softer and one harder. We use the softer rock when we need to increase the capacity and the harder when the quarry wants to produce a higher quality of aggregate,” he adds.
