Powerful Analyzers for Industrial-Powder and Pharmaceutical Manufacturers

TSI offers more than 40 years of experience designing and manufacturing measurement instruments for research, industry, and defense. TSI produces a broad line of particle and powder instruments, including equipment for bio-aerosol detection, particle characterization, exposure monitoring, powder flowability analysis, spray characterization, medical-inhaler analysis, and macromolecule analysis.

Powder Flowability

The basic principles of the TSI Aero-Flow Automated Powder Flowability Analyzer, developed by Dr. Brian Kaye, provide a significant breakthrough in powder flow measurement. Based upon this new approach, the Aero-FlowTM utilizes deterministic chaos theory to analyze the avalanching behavior of powder. These avalanches exhibit linear relationships typical of the flow behavior of the powder. The use of fractal dimensions in data space, evolved from interest in the behavior of sand heaps, provides a quick and effective method of quantitative powder flow analysis.

The Aero-Flow Automated Powder Flowability Analyzer makes flowability measurements automatically, without operator intervention. The operator simply places the powder to be studied in a cavity disk, which rotates slowly during operation. The powder builds up to an unstable condition and an avalanche occurs. The avalanche is detected and measured photoelectrically. The Aero-Flow analyzer uses a diagram known as a Phase Space Attractor Map to summarize a series of avalanches.

Sample applications:

-Tracking blends of powders

-Evaluating the effect of flow agents

-Effect of particle size distribution on flow

-Fines population and flowability

Powder Particle Sizing

TSI® announces a robust, easy-to-use, single-particle-counting analyzer designed and built to meet the rigorous demands of industrial-powder and pharmaceutical manufacturers. The new PSD 3603 Particle Size Distribution Analyzer is a powerful tool for characterizing dry powders and medical aerosols according to particle size. It measures particles in the range from 0.2 to 700 micrometers in diameter using an aerodynamic time-of-flight technique. Key features include 21 CFR 11-compliant software, high-resolution measurements, fast setup and cycle time, complete dispersion without milling, and repeatable results. The PSD 3603 provides fast, reliable measurements using a very small sample size. Multiple tests are possible, even when sample quantities are limited.

The PSD 3603 is a totally integrated system for dry powder dispersion and particle size measurement. It requires no external pumps, air supplies, vacuum cleaners, or milling devices. Operation is straightforward and requires no sample preparation. Simply load the sample and set the software to run an analysis. Within minutes, the instrument generates a complete, high-resolution characterization of the sample, including geometric size, aerodynamic size, surface area, and volume distributions.

PSD 3603 software is easy to use. Users may set test parameters, compare run-to-run results, generate detailed graphs and reports, and export data files to other programs. Pharmaceutical companies will find the software helpful for complying with government regulations such as 21 CFR, Part 11. For quality-control purposes, industrial-powder manufacturers will appreciate the same features that make this compliance possible. Single-particle counting enables PSD 3603 software to provide true number distributions at the highest resolution possible. Users can easily identify populations of fines and outliers, and see the entire sample in detail.

Furthermore TSI develops and manufactures a wide variety of instruments for nanoparticle analysis, aerosol mass spectrometry, indoor air quality and exposure monitoring.

The TSI Particle Instruments team looks forward to welcoming you to the stand and will be available throughout the show to discuss individual powder characterization issues.
