RETAILERS, DISTRIBUTORS AND COFFEE AFFICIANADOES PROFIT FROM OXYGEN-FREE PROCESSING AND PACKAGING OF NEW CATEGORY SINGLE-CUP COFFEE PODS

Glen Rock, NJ: Protecting the taste, aroma, and emotional quality of freshly roasted coffee from premature aging and degradation caused by exposure to oxygen is a challenge that PBI-Dansensor America, Inc. has helped coffee processor Advanced Brewing Systems (ABS) to address in the production of the new individual unit-of-use pod packages that are quickly becoming a market favorite for delivering one cup at a time perfection.

As coffee cools after its been roasted, over 800 different essential oils, esters, and volatiles are released. It is when these gases come into contact with ambient oxygen, that the coffee begins to decompose, losing both aroma and flavor. Time, speed of processing, and exposure to atmospheric oxygen affect decomposition rates and impact distribution and consumer pleasure.

The innovative, new single cup pod category offers wider distribution, longer shelf life and an emotional satisfaction that comes from the experience. Unlike traditional coffee packages, in which a can or bag of coffee is at its best when it is first opened, but then quickly deteriorates from contact with atmospheric oxygen; the pod package is made and packaged in an oxygen-free environment so that the single serve pod retains its freshness and resists aging -- producing a simple, delicious, flavorful cup of coffee or espresso every time, with no mess or cleanup.

“Coffee roasting is an art that blends a variety of carefully selected beans that are processed within precision temperature, timing, humidity, and oxygen parameters,” explains Vincenzo Fulco, Managing Director of ABS. “Experience in recognizing the subtleties and nuances created by changes in machine speeds, temperatures, processing times, and oxygen exposure has helped us to work with coffee roasters to achieve and maintain exacting standards to optimize the quality of the coffee roasters’ signature blends. Oxygen content is the single most destructive variable we have to deal with, so we have installed a PBI-Dansensor oxygen analyzer to continually monitor and regulate the nitrogen gas flush throughout the process.”

The highly orchestrated ABS form/fill/seal operation begins when whole beans are placed into a hopper and ground within the automated, closed, precision-regulated nitrogen-flushed environment. A precise amount of coffee is dispensed onto a filter and covered with a top filter and then heat sealed to form a single round filter pod. The individual pod is then fed into a metallized foil pouch and sealed, collated, and discharged into a paperboard box and sealed.
