METSO MINERALS’ ‘d’ RIMS KEEP CONVEYORS IN THE GROOVE

Costs of maintaining Cable Belt® Conveyors can be greatly reduced thanks to a new longer-lasting pulley from Metso Minerals.

Metso Minerals has recently started full production of ‘d’ profile rims, which offer a wider groove than traditional polyurethane pulley rims. The new profile, significantly reduces the amount of wear that takes place, extending the pulley’s life.

The new ‘d’ rim is interchangeable with existing ‘b’ and ‘c’ rims, but the larger the cable diameter the greater the benefit. New systems with cable diameters less than 38mm will be supplied with ‘c’ rim pulleys, but systems with cable diameters of 38-51mm will be now supplied with ‘d’ rim pulleys.

Field trials and first orders are confirming that wear is improved and Metso estimates that pulley life spans will prove to be more than 25% longer.

Replacing worn pulleys is one of the main items of regular expenditure on older conveyor systems and can account for up to 40% of the regular maintenance costs. Cutting the frequency of replacements means substantial savings in components and labour as well as less downtime for the conveyor.

Conveyor alignment may deteriorate over time which can cause the drive cable to come into contact with the side of the groove, where there is a speed differential between the cable and the pulley. This difference in speed substantially accelerates the rate at which the pulley’s polyurethane groove wears out.

Metso Mineral’s innovative design for the ‘d’ rim pulleys minimises the rate of wear. The wider grooves allow more leeway for the cable to find its alignment without touching the side. The new steel shell used in Metso’s ‘d’ rim also allows the thickness of the polurethane wear-material to be increased to extend the operating life still further.

The ‘d’ rim is fully interchangeable with the earlier ‘b’ or ‘c’ models, enabling them to be easily substituted during the course of normal maintenance.

The ‘Zebra’ drive cable has also been developed to substantially reduce pulley wear and is ideally suited for use with ‘c’ or ‘d’ rim pulleys. When the time comes for a cable change, many conveyor systems are being converted to ‘Zebra’ cables to save on pulley maintenance and increase system availability.
