Union, NJ: An innovative, portable, self-contained Drum Containment System (DCS) available from De Dietrich Process Systems (DDPS) keeps toxic, explosive, flammable powdered materials, and powders with difficult flow characteristics totally contained to eliminate cross-contamination and personnel exposure during transfer operations from drums into any type of vessel or other container.
DCS technology uses multiple containment barriers, which enable powder to be transferred in any environment, directly into process equipment by a single operator. Unmatched flexibility, operator protection, and ease of operation present a cost-effective alternative to personnel protective equipment (PPE) and gravity-dependent transfer devices required by traditional powder transfer operations.
DCS is designed to be used in conjunction with Powder Transfer System (PTS). PTS pneumatically conveys material, by dense phase, into a chamber then releases it under slight nitrogen pressure directly into the vessel. The compact PTS can discharge into a vessel under pressure, vacuum or with solvents present.
With an OEL (operator exposure level) of considerably less than 1 µgm/m3 @ 1m per 8 hrs., a single operator receives substantial protection from product exposure. A suction lance connected to a PTS, easily manipulated from outside the glove box, enables the operator to transfer powders without the discomfort of protective gear, and without lifting heavy bags in the confined space of a glove box isolator.
DCS works by using the double liners of the product drum as a containment barrier directly inside the glove box. The operator freely manipulates the suction lance outside the glove box to transfer the material. After transfer, a containment barrier forms over the glove box and the drum so that the next drum can be put in place ready for protective transfer. The DCS can be completely cleaned and maintained in a totally contained fashion.
The height adjustable DCS is suitable for lined drums containing any powder material. In addition, the unit can be easily moved from one production area to another by means of a forklift or a pallet truck.
