New Cryogen-Free Superconducting Magnet for Eriez Laboratory

Eriez Magnetics Europe has continued to invest in its test laboratory facilities by building a new laboratory POWERFLUX Magnet for wet testing of mineral samples, such as kaolin, silica, calcium carbonate, clays, barites flours.

The LAB-POWERFLUX marks the latest technological breakthrough for Eriez. The Eriez LAB-POWERFLUX is a superconducting magnet with a difference. Whilst Superconducting Magnets have been used in MRI systems (for body scanning) and HGMS systems (High Gradient Magnetic Separation is commonly used in the fine white mineral processing industry), the latter have been overly complicated and extremely expensive. This in turn meant that only large volume mineral producers could afford to invest in such technology. Superconducting coils generate magnetic field more efficiently ensuring consistent separation of very weakly magnetic particles when compared to conventional electromagnets. In some processes this is vital for the mineral to be ultimately converted into a saleable product. There are also environmental benefits as the system allows processing of lower grade mineral deposits (with a tenfold increase in usable reserves recently proven) leading to greater longevity of the mine.

The POWERFLUX is cryogen-free, a significant feature when liquid cryogens are so expensive to buy and transport. Increasingly deposits are being developed in the more remote parts of the globe where cryogen supplies are difficult to obtain.

The new LAB-POWERFLUX laboratory unit is ideal for fast turn-around lab testing of samples or for pilot plant operation or as in the case of a recent enquiry for university research applications. It features a 2 Tesla magnet within a Cryogen free Cryostat that measures only 550mm high by 850mm in diameter and weighs in at 330kg. The open bore measures 200mm in diameter. Power for the magnet is drawn from a 13 Amp single phase socket. Power for the Cryostat coldhead is 3 phase 9KVa. Field can be changed at a rate greater than 5 Tesla per minute with a cool-down time from room temperature to operational state of 30 hours.

As there are many variables involved in making a decision as to the best magnet configuration, whether this applies to the LAB-POWERFLUX or any other magnetic separation system, it is highly recommended that test work be conducted in Eriez Europe’s laboratory on a feedstock specification. Variables which need to be considered when selecting a feedstock for testing include project or separation objectives, process variables, such as throughput velocity, processing time, matrix type and canister arrangement as well as feed properties, such as mineralogy morphology, rheology, chemical composition, particle size distribution, particle shape and slurry density. Size distribution, rheology and slurry density should represent a reasonable worst scenario because if ignored, these three parameters will seriously affect throughput of the final installation as they directly influence loading of the matrix and hence pressure on the canister.

Eriez laboratory test engineers will establish with the client optimum field strength, process velocity, processing time and matrix type. When selecting these parameters the focus will be on maximising yield or throughput without compromising on quality.

In addition to the LAB-POWERFLUX, the laboratory at Eriez Magnetics Europe also offers a unique High Intensity Magnetic Filter for wet testing up to 1 Tesla. Several hundred industrial scale units have already been successfully installed throughout the world typically for ceramic slurry and silica sand applications. For dry testing Eriez is able to offer Rare Earth Rolls up to 2 Tesla with diameters 300, 100 and 76mm, Magnetic Drums, including the patent-pending Dynamic Drum Separator for fine powders and Eddy Current Separators for non-ferrous separation applications. In addition to magnetic separation systems, the lab also has an electronic metal separator demonstration area as well as XRF analytical equipment for silica analysis.

Successful testing and assessment of individual needs is not just a function of good product design and having the right test equipment at one’s disposal but also about having the specialist knowledge and expertise which can only be gained by many decades of sample testing, as proven by Eriez Magnetics Europe.
