Grab Unloaders - Dust Control

Posted in: , on 17. Apr. 2004 - 11:41

Hi All,

We have at another site our terminla with ship unloaders for cement clinker.

The plant is over 30yo - original equipment still in use.

The unloading is done by the convnetional grab - clam shell type unloader that dumps into a hopper feeding a belt conveyor.

Can people pls advise/suggest of best technology for improving the dust emissions from the unloader.

From what I can see,

we can enclose the dump area and fit slewing bucket entry doors to enclose the "dump house"

try burnley baffles above the hopper grid......

I have not seen any of these ideas in action.

So, feedback and comments/suggestions welcome.

Thanks

James Morrish

Dear Mr. R J Morrish,

You are thoroughly conversant with the equipment, because it is already present with you. so, you will be right person for practical solution. Mine is only a loud thinking.

Generally, there is strong wind at sea shore, and it certainly carries away the dust when material is dropping from grab bucket to the hopper mouth. When I saw such installation, I also had a thought that why is the dust containment lacking? I have seen the wind carrying away the dust / material when it is falling from grab to the hopper mouth.

If we prevent blow of wind across the material fall, it will reduce the dust loss / spreading.

Now, grab bucket has entry exit passage on one side of hopper. If we can create vertical enclosure on other three sides of the hopper, then wind will not cross the dropping path and it will reduce the dust loss / spreading. As three sides are blocked, the straight path of wind will have a barrier. Some wind will be certainly present but its magnitude will be much less because it will have to change direction from horizontal to vertical.

The enclosure can be of thin metal sheet or flexible canvas, sufficiently wide enough to take care of grab bucket swing. People with the equipment or designers may examine such a feasibility, but I do not see other alternative, for a material like clinker. For some other materials dust loss reduction is possible by spraying water mist, if it is not objectionable to the material.

In existing equipment, incorporation of such feature will present certain problem but needs to be tackled accordingly.

Dear Mr. Morrish,

In regards to your clinker dust issue. Ishwar G Mulani has some good info on enclosure to reduce the incidence of cross current winds and fugitive dust air entrainment.

In addition to such enclosure, this is a good situation for foam dust suppression applied within the enclosure as clam bucket is dumping clinker.

I have had 25 years direct dust management experience including several similar clinker handling dust suppression applications of a foamable chemical that does not cause any detriment to the clinker or end product cement.

Effective, low moisture addition foam dust suppression applications are very appliucation technique sensative to prevent clinker dust build up on receiving chute works.

If I can be of any further asisstance please conatct me directly through my US office.

Grab Unloaders Dust Control

Ishwar Mulani has made the right suggestions as far as containment is concerned. If you can add Burnley baffles to the top of the receiving hopper, dust collection exhaust flow can be limited to 15 to 25 cfm/square foot, according to the open area of the hopper. Exhaust from below the baffles but be careful with placement of the exhaust connections so that they cannot be covered and blocked if the hopper is overfilled. Talk to your Burnley baffle supplier about that.

I would not try dust suppression with cement clinker. That is asking for trouble and will not be as effective as Burnley baffles with dust collection.

Grab Unloaders - Dust Control

Dear all,

We spray water to arrest dust generation. Not much effective, creates problem in transfer chutes due to wet & sticky material.

M/s B&W ( The Aumund Group) has one product based on Bag Filters & Hopper exactly for arresting dust during hopper loading by Grabs. Since I do not have any experience in this product, the information is being passed on just for any use to you.

You may visit their site www.bwmech.co.uk.

Dear Sir,

- Hide quoted text -

We have pleasure to inform you that we are manufacturing speciality chemicals for various industrial applications. We have Dust Suppression products range 'DUSTRON' for the DUST SUPPRESSION in mining operation for haulage road in open cast mines and for the bulk material handling systems.

We have a Memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Central Mining Research Institute (CMRI) Dhanbad, India which is a part of Council of Scientific & Industrial Research Govt. of India. CMRI is the world recognised Institute for the research in the field of mining operation.

The following products are approved and accepted by the Indian Mining Industries since last 10 years for better environmental and mining conditions.

1. DUSTRON PC Compound: For the open cast mines haul road where the dust emission is because of HEAVY EARTH MOVERS of high capacity trucks Dozzer, Tippler etc. DUSTRON PC is used for various class of mines in India for dust suppression in the mines as under.

(1) Iron Ore Mines

(2) Zinc Mines

(3) Lime Stone Mines

(4) Copper/Chromite Mines

2.DUSTRON PC COAL : For the open cast mines haul road of collieries, railway sidings and coal jetty's road of the ports.

3.DUSTRON PC LIGNITE : For the haulage roads of lignite open cast mines.

4.DUSTRON XT : This product is used for the dust suppression of bulk material handling system where at the transfer point crusher house, dumper platform dust emission is heavy, so along with water spray DUSTRON XT is used to control dust emission.

5.DUSTRON XT COAL : For bulk material handling system of conveyors, dumper platform, wagon tipplers of open cast/ under ground mines, Thermal power plants and coal jetty on the port trust.

All the above products are used in Indian mining industries to control dust for better environment & working conditions which produce no. of advantages.

We hope that you might be consuming some product for similar application. "Using DUSTRON RANGE OF PRODUCT SAVINGS IN WATER is 40%" with other benefits.

If you find any interest we shall send you the detail literature for your reference along with quotation.

We request you to send us your e-mail address to contact you on net.

E-mail: nrd@juno.com

We ensure you to provide you best services and technical back-up to your mines for dust suppression applications.

Awaiting for your valued inquiry.

Thanking you,

Yours faithfully
