KEY TECHNOLOGY Package Inspection System

Ensures Consistent Pack Quality

The new KPI(tm) Key Package Inspection System from Key Technology helps cigarette manufacturers improve package quality to enhance "shelf impact". The machine vision system detects crushed corners, unglued joints, exposed cigarettes, missing wraps or labels as well as printing, flap order, and alignment defects on individual cigarette packages.

The KPI system's matrix cameras overcome limitations often associated with line-scan cameras. Instead of detecting only one or two defects at a time, the system is capable of detecting up to 10 different types of defects in one pass. It also can be configured for three-, four-, or five-sided inspection. Defects as minute as misaligned label pixels are easily detected, even at speeds up to 850 packs per minute at belt speeds of 450 ft/min.

KPI's touch-screen graphical user interface allows cigarette manufacturers to inspect by shape, size, and shade criteria according to their own unique targeted defects. A Windows® XP imbedded operating system helps operators identify repeated defects that may require adjustments up the line.

The KPI is easily installed over existing conveyors minimizing the need to disassemble and reconfigure existing production lines. Installation is completed in eight hours or less. Key's network of field service technicians, in addition to service centers in Walla Walla, USA, Melbourne, Australia, and Beusichem, The Netherlands, provide 24-hour, worldwide support. Regularly scheduled training courses at the company's facilities or on-site enhance operator and maintenance crew efficiency.
