Tail end transitions

I was wondering if any one has used a crowned tail pulley on a conveyor with a short tail transition.

It is a 1400mm 5ply PN200 belt with 35 deg trough rollers with a very short transition from the tail into these 35 deg rollers.

Im interested to know if anyone has tried a crowned tail pulley to reduce the "buckling" on the belt & reduce wing tensions

Hello Shane,

Transition length requirement depends upon the tension in belt at that location. The transition length is calculated using this tension, such that belt will not buckle at centre and also its edges will not get over stretched. It requires calculation, based on specific data.

My book includes a full chapter to decide the transition length.

I have not come across any application to improve transition distance by using crowned pulley. One can improve (reduce) transition distance by marginally raising the tail pulley, provided belt settles on idlers well before skirt-board (for all variation in tension resulting from operational situation).

Dear Shane,

I have seen this attempted twice. In both cases, little was gained as far as belt recovery is concerned, but increased wear on the pulleys resulted.

The obvious best answer is to increase the transition zone so that it is not an issue.

If buckling at the tail is your primary concern, I suggest your money is better spent by using a segmented transition saddle similar to those offered by Richwood (visualize, in place of a idler set, a series of UHMW-PE blocks mounted onto an arced rail). The adjustable version has ~7 segments with pivoting wings to offer full support of the belt across the entire width. Another nice feature is the saddle frames use a std idler frame bolting pattern to simplify installation.

I can recall a particular application where I used them at a loading point within 4 feet of the tail pulley on a 60" conveyor. The saddles effectively eliminated an delamination type idler junction failure problem.

Maybe you have already solved this problem. If not, please contact me. I have completed transfer points such as this by gradually taking the flat belt at the tail pulley, to a full transition at the end of the load zone. Solution is too long for this forum but I would be happy to discuss this with you.
