is there a way to obtain bulk properties for calcium chloride in an easy maner without the use of fancy equipment. and what considerations should be taken to design and obtain a reliable flow in a storage bin with70kg capacity and discharge 12 kg of material twice a week. what kind of gate valve should i use to guarantee flow.

Bin Design For Reliable Flow.

The simple answer to your query is to send the material to Ajax Equipment Ltd. (see www.ajax.co.uk) for a detailed design evaluation.

The name ‘calcium chloride’ is totally inadequate to assess the flow behaviour of the material. Unless you can give a categorical assurance that the material is, and will remain in, a ver free flowing condition and reliably pass through a give size of outlet it is necessary to conduct measured physical property tests. These need to be carried out on a sample of the product that represents the worst state of flow of the material that is likely to be experienced in service. For large storage bins, the three key design parameters are - bulk density, wall friction and shear strength.

The first two can be established with simple equipment. Shear strength is more complicated, but a relatively simple and inexpensive vertical shear test is usually adequate to satisfy an experienced designer.

With regard to dispensing 12 kg twice a week it is clear that a 70 kg hopper will take nearly three weeks to empty. What are the ambient conditions and how accurate a batch measure is required. It would seem that the best approach is to use a small screw feeder system. The hopper can be sealed and a pneumatic end seal can protect the product from ambient moisture and a two-speed feed control the discharge. Depending on the degree of accuracy required it may be adequate to set the feed volumetrically, by way of a turn counter. Alternatively, the unit could be mounted on load cells.

A mass flow construction is recommended to yield the flow benefits and ensure that there is not indefinite storage of some product, were the hopper to be refilled before fully empty. Ajax will be pleased to conduct the powder tests and submit a proposal for the equipment on receipt on confirmation on the above points and receipt of a sample of the material to be used. Dear Mr. Ridelgad

The solution is very easy: Use our special silo design “THE IDEAL FLOW SILO”.

This type of silo is suitable for all powders independent of the flow properties. Thus ypu can reduce the testing of the powders nearly to zero. W require only a small sample of about 100 ccm, just to be sure that there is nothing out of the range.

We invite you to consult our website WWW.IPT-ONLINE.COM where you will find the whole range of our delivery program and services.

Please send us your full address and we will send you more information.

We advise you to follow our autumn course “ QUALITY CONTROL AND POWDER TECHNOLOGY” which will be give at University of Delft .
