Design a movable and reversible belt conveyor to feed lump coal to 8 bins?

Posted in: , on 3. Jan. 2003 - 07:35

There are 8 square bins (cross section dimension: 7¡Á7 meter) in our coal prep plant to store coarse coal (size range: 25¡ª80mm). These bins are located one by one with identical size and shape. Apart from the NO.1 bin and No.2 bin being fed directly, the screen oversize report to a stationary belt conveyer with a movable discharger that is a straight steel plate like the cleaning scraper and unload the coal to each bin. You know, this type of discharging is bad due to the belt wearing out easily. So we¡¯d like to modify this system with a reversible and movable belt conveyer to fill each bin. We are ready to apply the principle that filling the bin one by one from No.3 until No.8 with No.1 and No.2 bin as surge bin when we need to reverse or move the No.2 conveyer to the original position. The following is the elevation drawing of the bins and our design. It is quite easy to design a conventional belt conveyer. What we¡¯re meeting is that how to realize automatically control of this system according to the level of each bin without misalignment and blocking. You know, for reversible belt conveyer in especially short conveyer, it is difficult to take-up avoiding misalignment in limited space height. So I¡¯d like to listen to your consideration. Thanks a million.

The solution to the problem can be as-

1) Level Probe Switches can be placed in the bins and the outpu signal of these can be the input signal for the feeding conveyor.

2) The load cells can also be put at the bottom of the bins which indicate that what percentage of the bins are filled and those signalled can be used as the input to the feeding conveyor

ZXM:

The obvious question is: why not use a traveling tripper with a bifrucated discharge chute to replace the scraper plate?

One conveyor, fittted with a motorized tripper can receive the product, fill each bin, and reverse with full automation. It can replace the stationary belt or extend the stationary belt.

Level switches can give operator feedback on bin status or, by using a PLC, the filling logic process can be automated.

Because There Are Spiral Chutes Inside

To avoid the lump coal disruption, In each bin we installed spiral chute inside that led the coal slip to the bottom with minimum disruption. The inlet of the spiral is on the one side of the belt conveyer. That is the reason. By the way, Can you upload the figure of the travelling tripper? I'l like to know the detail of it.

You can single point unload from the traveling tripper from either side. To allow the tripper to move from station to station, the feed would have to be momentarily stopped or allowed to fall direct into the bin. Is this acceptable?

I will email images of traveling trippers next week.

ZXM:

Please advise the flow rates and material characteristics. Include where one conveyor or two conveyors are feeding simutaneously to the bin loading conveyor and its design criteria.

What kind of support system do you presently have, under the exiting two bin loading conveyors and their general arrangements with dimensional clearances.

Movable And Reversible Belt Conveyor

Posted on 10. Mar. 2003 - 12:36

ZXM:

There are three methods for feeding coal into bins arrangement shown by you.

1. Belt conveyor with plough discharge

2. Belt conveyor with movable (travelling) tripper.

3. Reversible shuttle conveyor

Method – 1 is used for light duty application where operation is only few hours in a day. It has fast wear of belt.

Method – 2 is used for heavy duty continuos operation, but conveyor tail end to closest tripper position will be few tens of meter distance. It may not permit to feed possibly bin 1-2-3.

Method – 3 is ideal for your case. Reversible shuttle conveyor can be constructed for length up to say 75m, very economically, It will have discharge between rails. The feed slot with safety grids will be also between rails. It can be also equipped with slot sealing system to prevent dust emission.

You have to install bunker level indicator for indication of high and low level of coal. It will be convenient for you to know the coal position from level indicator and then give manual command for automatic position of shuttle conveyor. This takes care of the situation such as a bin may not be in use etc. You can also have 100% decision making automatic positioning, but I have found operator decision better because such positioning will not be so frequent.
